Malaysia Food Blog, Malaysia Travel Blog

BM Kia says..
As I read through my blog posts for 2008, I found most of them are restaurant related reviews. I think this is deviating from my original purpose of food blogging, which is to discover and promote local foods, especially hawker fares. If not, it wouldn't be fit to be called "Malaysia Food Blog" So, my main aim of blogging for year 2009 would be to continue to do what I actually enjoyed the most - to travel, discover and promote cheap and tasty food.

Dell Bayan Lepas

Posted by: vkeong In: Work and Life () (19 views)

Few days ago I found out that I have a couple of high school friends, whom I haven’t seen for up to 3 years working in Dell too. Kien Soon is conducting his industrial training while Hui Fang is working in the Procurement department in AP2. Li Hua is also interested in joining Dell but too bad I am leaving after today. A pity I didn’t have much time to catch up with them, everyone has been busy. Anyway since today’s my last day working here, let’s take a small tour around :)
dell cafeteria
This is the new cafeteria I have been talking about in my last entry, quite big eh? Just completed about 3 weeks ago, it replaces both Dell’s old bakery and canteen.
cafeteria decor
From what I heard, Dell have spent quite a lot in decorating the cafeteria with lightings and plants like these.
cafeteria
A small stage for performances? Not sure because I haven’t seen or heard one yet. Look at the colorful balls hanging from the ceiling, don’t you think the decoration is very Christmas oriented lol?
breakfast
This is the breakfast I had today in the cafeteria, Western breakfast set @ RM2.50. It has a small portion of coleslaw(not nice, yucks) a slice of slightly toasted white bread, a fried egg, a slice of chicken ham, a sausage, and some baked beans. They also serve nasi lemak and fried noodles.
office
Lets move on to my working place ^_^ This place is where my team works. Previously it was occupied by Dell’s customer support team, they have moved downstairs. When they were here, the environment was quite hectic but now it’s all peaceful :D You can see my cubicle from here too, it’s just under the red balloon.
dell laptop
Shown here is my cubicle, with the standard notebook given to all developers, a Dell Latitude D600, Centrino 1.6GHz with 512MB RAM. Performs ok for normal desktop applications but tends to lag if developing in VS.NET.
cubicle 2
From L to R: Stationaty, leaflets, a box scribble papers I “snaked” from my previous company lol and my water bottle.
cubicle 1
From L to R: Walkman I borrowed from my sister, my badge, Milo, cup, sugar and my bag. It is unexplained why the walkman couldn’t receive any stations’ frequencies except FlyFM and 988. But once you step out of the building, reception will back to normal.. weird huh. pantry
A typical pantry here has 2 water dispensers and 2 vending machines. Sometimes people eat and have meetings here.

A close up of the vending machines, drinks are not free :(

Later today my team is organizing a farewell lunch for me at McD, so will try to snap some photos if possible :)

Dear VKeong,

Thanks for your pics of Dell’s cafetaria and your office cubicle. I’m doing head-hunting for this Client and your pics are a nice insight to the working environment. Like your food blog infos.

Reena

vk: Hi Harshad, welcome to Penang. For breakfast,
1. 2 pieces of roti canai/capati and a cup of tea would be around RM2.50- RM3.00
2. A packet of nasi lemak and tea = RM2.50

For lunch,
1. Chinese mixed rice and drink = RM4.50
2. Nasi Kandar (Indian Muslim curry rice) and drink = RM6.50
3. Hawker food (mostly noodles) and drink = RM3.50-RM4.50

For dinner, it would be the same for lunch. For restaurants, please prepare about RM10-15 for a nice meal. Drinks mentioned above typically cost RM1 - RM1.40.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot VK !…this will surely help

I need one more info..

Whats the normal rented apartment cost for a single guy in Penang(Can a share a room aswell)…and whats the deposit that I may hve to given initially..

Thanks in advance again !

Harshad

vk: Hi again Harshad, if you are renting an apartment in Sungai Ara/Bukit Jambul/Gelugor area (these are residential areas with lots apartments near to Bayan Lepas), it would cost RM400-600 for an unfurnished unit. Please note that for RM400, you will be getting a place with below average environment (lots of foreigners and factory workers) while RM500-600 would get you a pretty good place. I myself rented an apartment with RM500 before at Sungai Ara and the place was quite convenient with lots of eatery and supermarkets nearby.

If you are renting a room, master bedroom would normally cost RM200-250 while the small rooms cost RM130-160. Deposit wise, it’s quite common you have to pay 2 months’ rental in Malaysia
