Malaysia Food Blog, Malaysia Travel Blog

BM Kia says..
As I read through my blog posts for 2008, I found most of them are restaurant related reviews. I think this is deviating from my original purpose of food blogging, which is to discover and promote local foods, especially hawker fares. If not, it wouldn't be fit to be called "Malaysia Food Blog" So, my main aim of blogging for year 2009 would be to continue to do what I actually enjoyed the most - to travel, discover and promote cheap and tasty food.

Hooi Wang Restaurant

Citizens of Bukit Mertajam should not be strangers to Hooi Wang 辉煌 restaurant, famed for its steamboat. While only steamboat is available at the main branch in Taman Sri Rambai, the other branch located in Taman Mutiara serves both steamboat and Chinese dishes. Please pardon some of the blurry photos due to the restaurant’s lighting.

We began our dinner with Stir Fried Vegetables with Salted Pork. The salted pork are actually marinated three layer pork (pork bellies). While googling for “salted pork” Lilian’s salted pork recipe was one of the results lol.

Steamed Tau Fu that tastes like tau fu fa, but with dried shrimps and mushroom as the topping instead of brown sugar. Very smooth, melts instantly in your mouth

The Kam Heong Chicken here is quite special because unlike the usual style, it is fried first then cooked with some kind of sweetish curry powder.

Ahh.. this is the nicest among the dishes we ordered - Stewed Pork Leg 红烧猪脚, definitely must try! The skin and the thick layer of fat is really really unhealthy.. but too good to resist  This meal costed us RM76 inclusive of a big bottle of beer and a plate of fried mee tiao. I think it was quite reasonable, as all dishes were in large portions.

*Wanna clarify something here.. “Hooi Wang” has only one branch. The one in Taman Sri Rambai is actually “Hooi Kee”, I got their names wrong all this while lol :P

Ya. The Kam Heong chicken is very nice. It’s recommended for all. Meanwhile, the pork is too fattening. Too much fat. Yucks!

Naah, the better one is Mei Xin, just located behind Hooi Wang.

vk: Yes you are right! Mei Xin is much better! but their cleanliness could use some improvement… The dish I like most in Mei Xin is their curry shark.. super nice!
