Tomyam Noodles

November 15, 2006

For those working in Bayan Lepas, you should be familiar with the food court I am going to blog about. It is located beside Bayan Baru’s Sunshine Square supermarket and connected to the market. This huge food court has so many stalls that the number exceeds 100. However I am not sure whether there’s really more than 100 of stalls within it, didn’t went to count :P Moreover, only like 70% of the stalls are usually open. Pardon the images’ quality, they are taken using my camera phone Sony Ericsson W300i.

Stall no. 99 by the name ‘Lai Hoe’ sells quite good tomyam noodles. What distinguishes it from the others is that its noodles are cooked upon order. There are three ingredients selection for tomyam noodles: prawn (RM6.00), fish (RM4.00) or pork balls (RM3.00) You can also mix the ingredients if you wish. For example the one I had shown here is actually a fish tomyam maggi with pork balls added, it costs RM4.50. Be warned though, the tomyam soup is very very spicy.

To overcome the spiciness, ice blended red bean drink @ RM1.00 is a good choice :D

Chatter Kopitiam

November 13, 2006

So I was on a mission to Ipoh for white coffee last weekend, thanks to 8TV’s HoChak. Few weeks ago, the last segment of the programme introduced Ipoh white coffee. The moment I finished watching it, I said to myself, “Dang I must get some of those!”

kopitiam

And whaddya know, according to a camera-selling-uncle I met in Kinta City’s Jaya Jusco, the kopitiams in Old Town close after 6pm! So my mission was a failure. But I was determined, I shall not return without white coffee in my stomach! And that’s how I ended up in Chatter Kopitiam.

Chatter Kopitiam is situated in Jusco’s ground floor. One would easily mistake this shop with Old Town Kopitiam due to their similar design. Even the food offered is similar, Nissin noodles, nasi lemak, toasts… Shown above is Peanut Butter Toast @ RM1.40 - 2 slices of toasted bread with peanut butter sandwiched in between. It tasted quite good actually, a bit saltish on the outside. But they were very stingy with the peanut butter. Hmm.

Chang Jiang White Coffee

Ahhh.. what I’ve been waiting for the whole day. Hot Chang Jiang White Coffee @ RM1.80. It certainly looked like a cup of normal Nescafe/Kopi Susu anyone can make, anytime at anywhere. Luckily that’s not the case for its taste. White Coffee is certainly more fragrant, and tastes more ‘kao’ than normal coffee. BTW, I thought white coffee should have a layer of whitish bubble on top, like cappuccino?

Chang Jiang White Coffee

This is the iced Chang Jiang White Coffee, priced @ RM1.90. I like it because it didn’t lose its thickness with the added ice. Anyway if anyone knows where to get the best white coffee in Ipoh, do provide the information and help a poor soul lol. Thanks first!

Dinner @ Ristorante Bella Italia

November 12, 2006

Last Thursday was my department dinner. It was held at an Italian restaurant in Pulau Tikus‘ commercial area (Belissa Row, Jalan Burma) named Ristorante Bella Italia. At first I didn’t really liked the idea of having dinner there.. but I changed my mind after that :P *Photos courtesy of Foong Peng (I didn’t bring my cam)

There were 14 of us and we occupied like half of the restaurant lol. One of the appetizers offered is Fritto Di Calamari - deep fried squid ring served with tartare sauce @ RM15.00. We ordered 2 plates of this, it served as a great start.

This was my order that night, Bisueca Di Manzo Alla Boscaiola - grilled beef tenderloin steak with mushrooms @ RM42.00. It tasted OK only, and the meat wasn’t really as done as I wanted it to be. The grilled eggplants were bitter.. didn’t like them at all.

Spagehetti Alla Bella Italia - spaghetti with prawns, clams and asparagus in white garlic sauce @ RM25.00. I don’t know how it tasted but it sure looked good to me! I like the way the ingredients are arranged for presentation.

Agnello Alla Cacciatora Con Funghi - lamb shanks braised with mushroom @ RM32.00. I think this dish is worth your money the most.. the proportion is just huge! If you are wondering, shank is the part between the knee and ankle (according to the dictionary)

Trancie Di Tonno Alla Peperonata - pan-fried tuna steak served with flavourful tomato sauce and roasted capsicums @ RM32.50. This dish tasted good, and that’s coming from me who despises tuna now (I used to love it but not after a really bad experience early this year)

Our dessert, Tiramisu @ RM11.50. In Italian, this is called Mascarpone Cheese. It is basically a sponge cake layered with coffee (and chocolate too?) Funny though, I only felt the soft cheese part that melts almost instantly in the mouth

Shown here are merely a quarter of the dishes we ordered throughout the night. Other dishes we had include clam soup, various pizzas, tomato soup, mix seafood plate and baked chicken with black olives. A pity I didn’t bring my camera along.. it’s not often I get to eat good Italian food. Our bill came to a close RM800, RM900 if you take into account the service charges and tax. And yeah, I was stunned to know that lol.
