Lai Xiang Bak Kut Teh

December 23, 2006

It has been really long since the last time I had Bak Kut Teh since returning to Penang. The BKT here simply cannot match KL and Klang’s BKT. I think because I have already tasted a really good BKT, normal ones don’t attract me anymore. But recently a friend recommended me to try a BKT stall in BB food court just behind Sunshine Square Bayan Baru.

Lai Xiang Bak Kut Teh only opens at night and seats are quite limited. The day I went, it was drizzling and we were confined to sit along the shops’ corridor. Business was very brisk, customers were arriving non-stop. We ordered a person’s serving and a bowl of pork meat balls. Unfortunately for us, yiu char kueh was already finished by the other lucky customers..

I have no idea if the pork meat balls are made by themselves or bought from the market. They were really nice, sweet and tender. About the soup, it was thick and tasted heavily of Chinese herbs. This is different from Klang’s stlye which has a lighter taste.

Yau Choy was also on our meal, tasted good because of the meat floss. Really a lot, don’t you think? A meal for 2 like this costed around RM14-16, depending on the drinks ordered. Quite reasonable and I look forward to eat here again, my friend’s recommendation is good :D

Chili’s @ Midvalley

This is an old post, I decided to republish it because of some photo issues. I believe those of you who studied/worked in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor area have seen the restaurant. Its full name is Chili’s Grill & Bar Family Restaurant. From my observation it’s always packed during evening and there are always people queuing for seats, especially in the weekends. Reason is this is a nice place to hangout after a hard day at work, lucky for those who work in Midvalley eh? They can spend every Friday evening here.. but then you gotta have that kind of money to spend.

The interior of the restaurant is lightly dimmed with orange lights, creating a soothing feeling, as though to cure heal your body, mind and soul after a long week. There are small televisions placed strategically in every corner of the restaurant providing sports entertainment.

What’s Chillis called without chilli? :D

Some of the drinks here are labelled with “Bottomless” in front of their names, like “Bottomless Apple Juice”. This type of drink entitles the drinker to have unlimited refills. A good choice if you plan to stay around for a long time. When we tried to order a cup only, we were told they cannot refill it if we intended to share the drink lol. So we ordered “Southwest Sling” @ RM7.95 instead, the ultimate milkshake that is made of chilled pineapple juice, orange juice and vanilla ice cream.

The restaurant is divided into areas in which each is served by a specific roster of waiters. Chilis serves mainly steaks and burgers. In norm, meals are served orderly: appetizer, main course and dessert. Triple play(3P, not the other “3P” ok :P) is an appetizer consisting buffalo wings, fried chicken and egg rolls.

The egg rolls are the best, buffalo wings is a bit spicy(prefer road side BBQ chicken wings more) while the fried chicken tastes like KFC OR chicken… There are three different types of mayonaisse for you to dip. Not sure which is for which but they all taste about the same anyway.

The main course we had was Chicken + Beef steak, Cajun style. Cajun style means its spicy. The steak wasn’t great, I have had better in F1 LOL.. the specialty of this steak is that they provide you with a 4 slices of roti prata(?) and some fillings(not sure what they were) I wasn’t sure of the correct way of eating, so the natural thing to do was to make sandwiches out of it. Tastes good for the first few bites but it tends to get old pretty soon.

Lastly was our dessert, the nicest we had for the whole night. Ironically, we also enjoyed the dessert the most when we went to TGI Friday. The dessert is actually a piece of chocolate cake topped with ice cream and nuts. Heavenly :) Our bill came to RM80+.

Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie - absolutely delicious.

0P now lol, we were stuffed after the meal. By the way, I heard Chili’s going to open up a branch in Penang? That’s good news indeed!

T.G.I. Fridays @ Queensbay Mall

December 21, 2006

Recently I got a lot of hits from Google for TGI Fridays and Queensbay searches. Mostly because of a SmallTalk Queensbay post I made few weeks ago. This is the first TGI restaurant in Penang so everybody is quite curious. Anyway here you go, photos of the restaurant (whether you want to see it or not :P) And please pardon the quality lol, sometimes I take really bad photos.

Photos of the food at TGI Friday’s is not available yet.. Well I should have had them if it wasn’t fully booked last Monday. I was there and the only seats left were around the bar. What’s worse it was a smoking area. So it was a no-no for us.

“In here it’s always Friday”, and I do agree to that.

Food Bazaar @ Pesta Pulau Pinang

December 20, 2006

Besides shops selling stuff you don’t need and a fun fair, there’s also a food bazaar in Pesta Pulau Pinang. Mostly sold are Malay and Thai food, in fact they are the only choices.. Anyway Thai food was quite interesting, especially the Thai Coconut Ice Cream stall. If you haven’t tried Thai ice cream before, this is a very good opportunity (although you can find it at Tesco too..) A lot of photos to drool over :D

What’s interesting here is on the top left, Thai Chee Cheong Fun. Wrapped inside are seafood and vegetable. They don’t use sweet sauce but chilli.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Cucur udang @ RM2 per piece. Tasted great but a bit oily.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I wonder why Chrysanthemum tea label on clay cups.. Below the cups was a box of Thai soya bean milk. They cost RM3.50 per bottle if I remembered correctly. The seller claimed it were the tax and rental which caused the expensive price. Aiya I should’ve bought one to try.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Udang galah bakar, BBQ lobster? RM10 for 4 pieces, expensive stuff but they looked really nice.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Thai Sticky Rice with Mango. I never had this before, really curious how it tastes like.. Should be very sweet, well according to the articles I read on the Internet.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

A closer at the mangoes. Yum, my mango addiction is starting..

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Thai version of our fried oyster, fried mussels. RM5 per plate, looks really crispy and yummy.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Keropok and tidbits from Penang and our neighbour, Thailand.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

A big pot of boiling tomyam soup.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

And the ingredients for making tomyam noodles. A lot of people ordered this!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

BBQ Tilapia. The one on the left looked a bit burnt lol.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Cute hard boiled and fried quail eggs. I think they are 1/3 size of a normal chicken egg lol.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Fried rice, noodles and a big-pot-of-I-dunno-what :P

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Those big sausage lookalikes are actually wrapped otak-otak. RM2 for one, not nice at all..
