BM Kia says..
As I read through my blog posts for 2008, I found most of them are restaurant related reviews. I think this is deviating from my original purpose of food blogging, which is to discover and promote local foods, especially hawker fares. If not, it wouldn't be fit to be called "Malaysia Food Blog" So, my main aim of blogging for year 2009 would be to continue to do what I actually enjoyed the most - to travel, discover and promote cheap and tasty food.

Ingolf’s Kneipe German Bar and Restaurant

One of the nicest thing working in Jabil is getting the quarterly profit sharing. Every quarter all the employees would get a share of the company’s profit based on the performance in the past 6 months. The last quarter was the highest percentage of all time, and it’d be a very tough record to break. So I treated my family a lunch in Ingolf’s Kneipe German Restaurant and Bar.

Ingolf-Kneipe-Bar

Kneipe means bar in German, it is well known for its nice, big portioned and resonably priced German cuisine.

New-Zealand-Lamb-Chop

Since we went in the afternoon, only lunch menu is served. Still, they have quite a wide selection of food to choose from. Their special lunch set would be lamb shank at RM23 something.. I ordered a Duo New Zealand Lamb Chop with mint sauce. It was OK only, maybe because I didn’t like the mint taste.. and the meal was kinda dry because there was no gravy, I had to steal Siang Leng’s :P Anyway that day earlier I already decided I must have lamb for the lunch, so my choice would be either lamb shank or lamb chop only. Now think back I should have ordered the lamb shank lol.

Minced-Pork

Siang Leng’s order, German minced pork served with salad and mashed potato. The gravy is super nice and went soooo well with my lamb chop.. I can still remember her first reaction after tasting it.. “Wah, so nice laaaaaah!”

German-Pork-Sausage

My mom ordered German pork sausage, which is also served along with mashed potato and salad. The sausage is almost thrice the normal thickness of a normal sausage, and tasted superb. The meat is very tender unlike normal hotdogs which are soft. This is a must try if in Ingolf’s Kneipe, it costs only less than RM12.

Chicken

My brother and father ordered the same dish, chicken (with mushroom sauce?) but different parts. You can choose either chicken breast or drumstick, but give me drumstick anytime!

Dark-Chocolate-Mousse

For dessert we had Julian’s dark chocolate mousse. Don’t mistake it is like ice-cream because it is not cold at all and had creamy butter like texture. If you love chocolate you’d definitely love this one :) Ingolf’s Kneipe is located at Tanjung Bungah, right opposite Conthorpe Orchid Hotel/Penang Chinese Swimming Club. There is a winding road leading to the restaurant on your left just after the petrol station along the way to Batu Ferringhi.

Table

With all the food we orderd, the bill was only around RM76, and everyone gets a free glass of iced lemon tea. I highly recommend this restaurant for Western food with some German touch. Besides the environment here is relaxed and cosy, the perfect place to wind down and have dinner after work. Prior reservation is advised.

yni - I think all restaurants will treat ang moh better, won’t you if you own one? :P But they weren’t rude to us when we went there.. The service was normal, nothing out of the ordinary. They were very very busy due to the number of guests though

vkeong,

xweing, lol I can’t really agree with your statement, it’d be shooting my own foot. Penang drivers are a terror though

yni, Maybe it’s just one particular staff.. I called to ask their restaurant location before I went too.. They were quite helpful, giving me the full directions

yni, why pray? It is their duty to serve customers well. If you are not happy with their services, voice up your dissatisfactions. I went to a rather famous restaurant once and had their mix grill that cost RM35++. The lamb stinks and spoiled the whole dish. When I complained to the waiters they only offer to reduce 20%, but when I brought the matter to the manager, he apologized and offered not to charge the mix grill on the bill.

It may be due to he thought I am a reporter or something (coz I carry a big camera everywhere I go) so he acted like that. But the main point is that you must use your right as a consumer well ;) If you do not let the management know their staff is rude, they won’t improve :)

Hei there, i think the right way to make a complain if you really think it’s not fair is simply just ask the waiter to call his/her manager. Then from there proceed with your complain and if still not satisfied with the feedback they are giving, then probably ask who is the next highest or maybe the owner of the place. If this is not effective, then go to the Consumer Association and place a complaint(or be a little childish and write a whole BLOG about it)

:-)
Cheers ppl!

Your blog is great! Keep it up! Talking about German cuisine, there is one in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. The food is really good and reasonably priced. The restaurant name is STADT GERMAN CUISINE & BISTRO, located backend of HSBC Bank, behind Carrefour (Kepong). Try the food and let us know your view.

vkeong,

I agreed with you about the food in ingolf’s. There is another eatery called bistro @ Hardwicke in Penang. It’s located between Northam Tower at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. It’s a bungalow style bistro. Cozy and friendly staff. No matter you are local or ang moh, they treat you equally. Don’t get cheated by the interior design because previously they are fine dining and now they changed the concept into bistro dining. Price are very reasonable. Apart from the menu, they even have set lunch & dinner that changes every week. Give it a try and let us know your view. I love that place very much.

Hey Vkeong,

i went there with my family for dinner a week after mother’s day. Their staff are really RUDE in service, asked for order sounds worst then hawsker uncle, serve drink with “flying (throwing) coaster”. And the don’t know what they are serving….geeessss. probably the dinner shift worker are truly bad attitude. i and my husband cant stand the way they served. at the end we didnt voice out, because we were celebrating our mother’s day dinner, they already spoiled our mood.

anyway, we are abit dissapointed beacuse they aint fully cater german cuisine, and the menu served less then half german food. a german restaurant wihout focused on their cuisine? sounds funny. Pork knucle? only available on wednesday…german sausages? took stock from dealer…they have no specialty…..cannot tahan.

wont go there again event the only german restaurant in penang. (as i know)

Is there any good german food in penang? pls tell meeeeee……pls

vk: Sorry I don’t know :( their service so bad already? I heard some people getting good service, and some getting bad service.. i think depends on the occasion.. let’s see if i can forward this complaint to them.. they must know about the staff’s bad attitude!

VK,

GOSH!! why do they close for LUNCH!! Plzzzzz Open!
I was a regular when they opened for lunch last year, went there about 3-4 times a week, food was gorgeous and very reasonable & no complains on the service so far. didn’t recall they ever serve lambshank during lunch as it was only specifly on dinnertime..hmmmm. .
Was there on Mother’s Day dinner,I wld say the staffs were rather efficient that nite. The only thing i wld complain is that the portion is way to big for me. The main dish took awhile to come but it was understandable as the restaurant was packed. Other than that everything turned up pretty good. Looking forward dinning there again on Fathers Day!!

I am a long term customer of Ingolf’s. This German restaurant offers superb value for money! The quality of the food has never disappointed me and again and again, I enjoy the cozy atmosphere, the cool beer and the rich choice of excellent dishes prepared by Chef Julian. Recently Ingolf has opened an additional section for non-smokers, as the original space is normally fully occupied. Ingolf and Julian have run Ingolf’s Kneipe for 10 years and what demonstrates better that customers are satisfied with the quality and volume of food, the cozy atmosphere and the service by his staff.

In response to the comments of June 5 by gill gill, I would like to state that also restaurant customers can occasionally be very rude and should not be surprised to receive a less than satisfying service. During the many times I visited Ingolf’s Kneipe I have never seen any “flying coasters” or otherwise rude behavior of the waiters.

Apparently gill gill has not been in Germany, where the majority of small restaurants (Kneipe) source from suppliers. What makes the difference between a good and mediocre restaurant is the PREPARATION of the dishes from these sourced ingredients, and in my view, Ingolf’s Kneipe ranks high in the group of good restaurants.

I disagree with the writer! Many dishes in Ingolf’s Kneipe are home-made e.g. Goulash soup (you don’t find any better in Penang), the unique Pork Knuckle, Pork Goulash, Beef and Pork Patties, Jaegerschnitzel, Beef Rolls and Chicken Meat Loaf, just to mention a few. And don’t forget all of his tasty sauces! All Home-Made and all German!

As in politics, where there should be an opposition party, Ingolf’s Kneipe cannot have only friends and gill gill has her free choice to find another restaurant and continue nagging about that…

Signed, another regular and satisfied customer of Ingolf’s Kneipe

I have always been a regular at Ingolfs, what I have to say is the food is one of the best in penang. Its purely original german cuisine and my husband and i never fail to be there during the weekend , though I live in another end of the island.
Great compliments to Chef Julian and Chef Ingolf. And please ignore the awful blogs, you are doing great!!

vk: Ms Dora, you are right about every one entitling to their own opinions.. So let Gill Gill’s thoughts be heard :) Thank you for your kind comment!

Their service is really bad especially the manager. So rude. I went with my colleagues for a farewell dinner and one came a bit late (we booked from 7.30 to 8.30). We he asked for menu, the manager rudely said ‘I need my table back at 8.30pm’

I went there again last week for my birthday. My friend booked for 8 people and 11 people turned up. The table is quite small even for 8 so we asked whether we can have a table top. The manager acted busy and only answered us after a few minutes. At first he said not enough waiter to carry out the table top and we said we can carry cause got a few guys in our group but later he said too many customers. He didn’t want to disturb other customers. That’s really a lousy reason. We were so pissed off and went to the restaurant beside instead (bulgarian restaurant). The lady boss is really nice. Cause it was last minute and so many of us, she still manage to get us a big table.
