Delicious Ice Kacang in Bukit Mertajam

October 16, 2007

For good ais kacang in Bukit Mertajam 大山脚, most will head to a famous stall in Taman Jaya (directly opposite BM Country Club) We, BM lang refer it as 榕树下 ice kacang because the food court is built under a big tree. It is built as simplest as possible - place some tables and chairs under a big canvas shelter and walla, a place to eat!

Ais Kacang

A bowl is only RM2 and comes with generous amount of “toppings” Why the double quote? Because all toppings are hidden beneath the ice! This is very different from ice kacang in Penang island, where the toppings are placed on top of the finely shredded ice.

Ais Kacang

Digging in to reveal the hidden toppings. In my opinion the ice kacang is good, but not as good as the ones in Lorong Selamat or Swatow Lane. I think the main reason is because it lacks the sarsi/ice cream flavor. Plus the presentation is not as colorful as it could be.

Delicious Ais Kacang

Besides ais kacang, there are also stalls selling kuih, curry mee, mee goreng, sotong kangkung etc. The mee goreng is good stuff, maybe I will blog about it next time. Err.. and you can see there were newspaper articles recommending this ais kacang stall, which they collected and displayed proudly.

Taman Jaya

There, the big tree I mentioned earlier. The popularity of Delicious Ice Kacang in Bukit Mertajam is clearly evident from the number of vehicles parked there. And if you come here at night after 8PM, then you’d be savoring IMO the best char koay teow in Penang, super highly recommended lol.

Still prefer Ipoh ice kacang… it’s different from Penang. Penang have sarsi syrup, but Ipoh have santan lemak.
