Malaysia Food Blog, Malaysia Travel Blog

BM Kia says..
As I read through my blog posts for 2008, I found most of them are restaurant related reviews. I think this is deviating from my original purpose of food blogging, which is to discover and promote local foods, especially hawker fares. If not, it wouldn't be fit to be called "Malaysia Food Blog" So, my main aim of blogging for year 2009 would be to continue to do what I actually enjoyed the most - to travel, discover and promote cheap and tasty food.

Ice Kacang @ Swatow Lane - Quality Dropped?

Posted by: vkeong In: Ais Kacang| Food and Drink| Hawker Food| Penang () (17 views)

If you have copy of Rasa Rasa Penang book “a visitor-friendly guide to its food” and went to try Swatow Lane’s ice kacang based on its recommendation, you will be disappointed. I am not blaming the author for this, as I have also recommended this as one of the best ice kacang in Penang. It’s just that the ice kacang quality has dropped so much it has became normal tasting only.

The weekend before CNY I went for a cari makan trip around the island (based on the eating guide) It was scorching hot and we decided to enjoy a bowl of ice kacang. So, we went to New World Park because it was the nearest place that time.

It looked and cost the same, with the colorful ingredients consisting of corn, atapchi, red bean and grass jelly. The ice cream is added on request ok, so remember to ask for it if you want one. The ice kacang definitely tastes better with ice cream. Another two ice kacang I would recommend are Kek Seng and Lorong Selamat. But I am not sure if they are still that tasty though.. gotta find out for myself one day. Anyone reading this had a good bowl of ice kacang recently? Mind suggesting a nice one? Thanks!

i think the ice kacang at the old kopitiam just opposite new world park has better ice kacang now. also can add lots of fruits and ice cream. somehow, ever since the hawkers moved into new world park, the food not so nice d… especially the cucur udang, really standard drop. but the ‘zhang’ stall still ok.

somehow i prefer my ice kacang with gula melak instead of the red syrup. :)

I heart ice kacang and I bought that book too. Sad to hear that the quality dropped, though.

This is true! I’ve been there recently and blogged about my disappointment too. http://aftergiovanni.blogspot.com/2008/02/lunch-at-new-world-2.html Another thing my sisters observed was poor hygiene for the sliced fruits, which strangely enough, was never an issue while they were located next to longkang.

Hi, Keong. do try the ice kacang/cendol at raja uda beside sin tatt garden, a branch from the popular chailengpark ice kacang/cendol behind the old Weslesley cinema building. Doesn’t have toppings like icecream and fruits but it is generous with red beans. Not bad. There are many great food also in raja uda especially on charkoayteow and pasembor at very reasonable price.

[...] of the nicer ais kacang in Penang which has still managed to maintain the quality and taste (unlike New World Park’s), which I’d still recommend going to my friends. The price did went up a bit though.. [...]

The legend is no longer so legendary … sigh! Quality has deteriorated tremendously :-( Was so dissapointed from my National Day / August visit to the “new” Swatow Lane!

vk: Yaloh :( So disappointed. I prefer them when they were selling in the old coffee shop.. that time everything tasted nice leh
