Penang Curry Mee @ Lorong Seratus Tahun
| Share |
This morning I finally get to try the famous curry mee at Lorong Seratus Tahun. As weird as it may sound, there is really such a street in Penang next to to McAllister Road. I have been wondering the exact location of this stall and didn’t realise I have drove pass that area so many times!
By the way, I will be leaving my job for Cyberjaya (again!) soon so I am trying my best to try all the good food in [tag]Penang[/tag] while I still have the time. And my blog would most probably concentrate on KL and Selangor food instead already..
I first knew this [tag]curry mee[/tag] from penangfaces. And I also read that the special thing about their curry mee is the dark chilli sauce, which adds a lot of oomph to the noodles. As you can see from the color of the soup, very little coconut milk is used.
This stall has been selling here for quite a long time and I think the current owner is the 2nd generation already. They even opened a new branch in SS2 Petaling Jaya. But I bet the taste won’t be as authentic and as good as this one along [tag]Lorong Seratus Tahun[/tag].
Here’s the chili sauce I have been talking about. Each table would be given a bowl and you may scoop as much as you like. As dark and as spicy it may appear, it’s actually not. I added three big spoonfuls of the chili sauce into my curry mee and it still was ok, wow am I that spicy tolerant? Anyway I refrained from adding more because the chili oil would make my soup too oily lol.
A regular order costs RM3.00 and RM3.50 for the bigger one. It comes with three fresh medium sized prawns, cockles, tau pok and lots of tu ang (coagulated pig blood) Recommended to try if you haven’t.

Yeah! Another Penang food blogger leaving Penang. I think it is true that there is a down turn of Penang attraction to foreign investment that seem less and less opportunity for talent to remain in Penang vs. the early 90′s. I feel sorry for the depart of a Penang flogger but I even sorry for the state of economy of Penang!!!!

This is one of my favorites. Best thing is that the chili is on the table, can put all you want!
My number one would still be the one in Kuantan Rd. market. They used to have a night branch at Terengganu Rd., not sure they still do. Besides the one at Kuantan Rd., they also have another one near my house in one of the coffee shops in Island Glades. All the stalls are run by family members.
I’ll normally order to have it delivered to the soya bean shop.
.
Soya Bean (with brown sugar) + Curry Mee = cloud nine
vk: Kuantan Road and Terengganu Road?? Oh my this is the first time I heard such road names in Penang. Seems like you’re a curry mee lover too haha. Nice!

This curry mee was very famous, dubbed the best in Penang in the 70s. It operated from the backlane behind the seller’s house at Lorong Seratus Tahun those days.
The patriach was a very rude man and the story was his tricycle cart was overturned by some furious customers. From that time, the wife was running the show. The standard dropped.
They have 3 sons. One selling opposite Anson Road market, called Tasty Coffee Shop, the same row as the former New City Pub. Another son, Ah Kong is now doing this flourishing business in style having his own cafe at Damansara SS2, PJ. A son is operating with his mom at the location of the photograph above, opposite Kin Too Hotel.
The standard could not match their father’s time.
The patriach has 2 other brothers; the eldest was selling inside Anson Road Market, the youngest one was operating at the junction coffee shop of Perak Road and Macalister Road.
The latter had retired because his son refused to take over this good business; instead ventured into selling hotdogs.
One thing special about this Macalister Road brother’s curry mee was in his fried prawns and chillies. Wow, terrific and fantastic!
But, the madness was this guy charged RM1.20, RM1.30… RM2.20. OMG, how did he managed his wares by a 10 sen increment?
I have recently come across one very similar in tastes to the patriach and his youngest brother. Excellent! The prawns are not of the same preparation, but of equally good standard too –
Nite Hawker Centre at Jalan Binjai, Taman Seri Rambai, Bukit Mertajam.
vk: Hi there, I believe I have tried the curry mee in Tmn Sri Rambai you mentioned. It used to my favorite when I was young from Form 2 to Form 6. The taste is really good with fresh prawns and thick, dark chili sauce. You gotta wait a while before the soup gets tasty though, lol. This CNY I hope I get the chance to try it again as well as dedicate a blog post for it too.

Jojo loves curry mee (May 8, 2008) -
The chillies are dark in colour because they are dried chillies (huan chio kuah); not the bright red chillies. Dried chillies are ground and fried with oil giving the dark red colour shown in the pix. The son, Ah Kong’s PJ shop is at the address below:
Lorong Seratus Tahun Curry Mee
56, Jalan SS2/66, 47300 PJ Selangor

The curry mee you mentioned was there some 15 years ago. Location was the coffee shed at the junction of Assumption Road and Chain Ferry Road. Agreed it tasted the same as Penang Lorong Seratus siblings which have operated more than 35 years ago.
There is one “White” curry mee at Kuan Nan Coffee Shop in Chai Leng Park, Butterworth. Put enough chillies, and the taste is great!
