Prawn Noodle @ Ho Yee Kee, Kepong Baru
| Share |
Ho Yee Kee is a restaurant in Kepong Baru serving mainly Prawn Noodle and Lum Mee. I feel it is not common to see a restaurant specializing in prawn noodles, so I just had to try it out.
And to make things even more interesting, the prawn noodles sold here is claimed to be Penang’s Pork Ribs [tag]Prawn Noodle[/tag] (we call it Hokkien Mee by the way).
To stand out among others, Ho Yee Kee lets customers add extra toppings like pork ribs, lala, prawns, shredded pork, squid and others. Each extra topping will be charged differently depending on what is chosen. Naturally, pork ribs and lala will cost the most. A big bowl of a normal prawn noodle would look like this.
This is the small one. One good thing about Ho Yee Kee is that they are not stingy with the noodles, a small serving would be just nice for the average eater.
Prawn noodle with extra pork ribs, it cost RM3 to add the ribs. It wasn’t a lot but at least they tasted nice and tender.
Although it’s called Penang Prawn Noodle, it is nothing similar to the ones in Penang. The soup is thicker, looks a lot redder and tastes already quite spicy by itself even without chili.
I also found the chili sauce having a prawny taste, probably they used prawn paste to prepare it. But, I advise not to add too much of the chili sauce because it will make the soup very very salty.
Those at the top tray are the extra toppings I mentioned earlier. They really prepared a lot huh, stacked like a small mountain.
I wouldn’t say Ho Yee Kee‘s prawn noodle is great but it is still better tasting than many others. Their business seem to be doing very well and a new branch, a big one has recently opened in Desa Aman Puri.
Their trademark is this huge eye-catching prawn sign that you can see from afar. Well, I will definitely return one day to try the other toppings especially lala, kinda curious how it would taste like.

Oh.. I think they are promoting one of the different tastes of Penang Hokkien Mee. We have the salty ones, sweet ones, spicy ones, rib broth ones and of course the tasteless ones too.. LOL!
I have heard so much about this stall. I hope I can visit them one day to taste them myself. I’m sure it would be better than most of those suppose-to-be Penang Hokkien Mee stalls in SS2 area.

I’ve never had this type of ‘hokkein mee’ or prawn noodles before, looks really unique and good. When I first see the redness, I thought it was ‘hong chao noodles’ hehe =D

Hmm.. I been there before, they open business for 24hours if not mistaken, thus I even been there while midnight. Overall is still ok, but the most hokkien mee I like is still penang hokkien mee. Maybe I am hokkien lang and from penang? lolz.. Honestly, I love penang foods and proud to born in penang – bukit mertajam!

Try the one from O&S coffeeshop in Paramount garden in PJ. I would say its kinda good when i last tasted a few years back. Now not sure la…
Need to try this prawn mee in kepong.. im a hokkien mee fanatic
about 3 years ago
I agree the O&S prawn noodle tastes nicer than Ho Yee Kee’s. I’m from Kepong and I frequent HYK quite often when I was younger, now not so much.
vk: Thanks for the recommendation. I will hunt this stall down *grins*

Ho Yee Kee? Nothing like Prawn Noodles at all from any angle. Nothing but hot chillies. The base is plain salty. I would not eat there for free. Oh… did I say the price is steep? … and if you had not notice, they use the cheapest kangkung leaves. Yes, there are several types, and they used those that grew by the longkang – no kidding!

tis prawn mee not taste good, the soup taste not standard, sumtime salty, sumtime spicy.
Used to be okay until the boss fucked it up nicely. It’s too salty. Price is steep and the boss is too LCLY. I asked my staff to tapau for me and to add an extra prawn. The boss looked at her and said “Are you sure? Very expensive one wor!!!” So that bowl of prawn mee (with ONE big prawn) cost RM18.00!
Try the prawn me at Taman Kok Doh. The one near The Store, Sungai Mas, roughly opposite the Taman Kok Doh Kentucky Fried Chicken. They have photos of Eric Tsang and various celebrities hanging over the stall to show that they’ve been eating there.
The Loh Mee opposite and to the right of The Store (2nd stall) is also nice.
