Malaysia Food Blog, Malaysia Travel Blog

BM Kia says..
As I read through my blog posts for 2008, I found most of them are restaurant related reviews. I think this is deviating from my original purpose of food blogging, which is to discover and promote local foods, especially hawker fares. If not, it wouldn't be fit to be called "Malaysia Food Blog" So, my main aim of blogging for year 2009 would be to continue to do what I actually enjoyed the most - to travel, discover and promote cheap and tasty food.

Puchong Yong Tau Fu @ Puchong

Posted by: vkeong In: Food and Drink| Non Halal| Puchong| Selangor| Yong Tau Fu () (56 views)

Yeah, I know the title sounds weird. But, that’s the name for this famous and delicious yong tau fu restaurant in Puchong, simply “Puchong Yong Tau Fu“. I was actually brought here by my housemate who discovered the restaurant long time ago. Since then, I have been here a couple of times and it could have been more if not for the toll between Puchong and Cyberjaya.

yong-tau-fu-soup

The yong tau fu here is made fresh. Means, you choose the items like brinjals, lady’s fingers (okra), chili and the cook will stuff them with meat after that. I guess it’s safe to say that the yong tau fu here is really fresh and nothing is prepared beforehand.
I don’t know if you noticed, some yong tau fu restaurants already prepared the items earlier. So, when an order is made, they simply deep fry them again. We should insist on fresh food, no?

yong-tau-fu

This is the way I like my yong tau fu, with soup. If you are here, the one thing you must definitely try is the deep fried tofu (tofu pok) sandwiched with pork meat. It’s super crispy! Honestly I was quite surprised that tofu pok can taste so good lol. Shown here is the set the cook customized for four of us. It cost a little under RM10 for each of us.

ji-bao-gai

On my second vist, we ordered the Ji Bao Gai (paper wrapped chicken) If you remembered I said something about Ji Bao Gai being cold, this is it. Too bad, because of that the Ji Bao Gai didn’t score high points for me. I wonder if you could ask the cook to re-heat them or something? I will find out next time OK.

yong-tau-fu-brinjal

I am not a big fan of brinjals (ai gua) but SL is, it’s her favorite in yong tau fu. So, I only take the meat and leave the brinjals for her, lol.

Here, the restaurant can be easily spotted as it’s located just opposite SK Puchong Batu school. Overall, very nice and highly recommended. Just for clarification that’s not my car OK lol. Try to get here an hour before or after school as the traffic can get a little congested.

If you go there on Saturday (if not mistaken), it’s even more congested as there’s pasar malam nearby.

vk: There’s a pasar malam nearby on Saturdays, but I don’t think it would affect this Yong Tau Fu restaurant? Not too sure though

I don’t know about KL or KL greater area Yong Tou Foo stalls, only tried a stall at Ampang during one of my summer holidays.
Not bad lah, portion is huge but nothing fantastic, I think it’s over rated and over crowded.

The stuffing used in Ipoh version of Yong Tou Foo is the best, fish, tender pork and dried cuttle fish (Diu pin - Canto intonation).

One thing I am sure of is that Ipoh has the best Yong Tou Foo..seriously, I am not biased here..it’s true.
If u ask any gal or guy from Ipoh, they wouldn’t really like any other Yong Tou Foo..

If the memory seves me right, there is this stall near Sam Tet secondary school in Ipoh, it’s called

1. Bentong yu dan fun (Canto intonation) , in Ipoh, when they say yu dan fun fish ball noodles stall, they also mean yong tou foo as well. The stall homemade vinegar-ed chilli paste is to die for and a must to go with their food. They also do small or big ‘dai yun’ (beef ball with tendons and thin ginger slices)… I miss this stall dearly.. oh yes, last but not least, they do fried version of yong tou foo too!

2. Another place, open air…yes, the seating are like on soil and grass patches!Ipoh (no idea where it is, ask the Ipohans in m’sia), I was brought there to savour fried yong tou foo (which is what they are popular with)…

3. in Old town side in Ipoh, the coffee stalls that serves also yu dan fun (Includes yong tou foo), egg tarts, kaya tost, ice cold white coffee, steamed egg custards, etc in the morning during breakkie time…the noise and the coffee aroma are so heart warming (not sure if it’s still like what I have in mind nowadays)…these stalls worth checking out especially in the morning!

4. There is this another shop (air-con), near Ave Maria school, the name includes ‘Nam’, not the previous shops you have been too..
They do yu dan fun(yong tou foo and beef noodle soup included), quite nice too, but pricey..

These are the infos I could share with u now, hope u wil be in Ipoh soon to take good pics of more good quality Ipoh food :)

Luckily, my dad is Hakka, Yong Tou Foo being a Hakka dish, I still have the blessing to have them overseas..

But, Ipoh ones are still the best (Sorry dad!)
