Matsuki Japanese Restaurant Teppanyaki

April 24, 2008

Matsuki Japanese Restaurant serves by far the best teppanyaki I’ve ever had in Penang. Forget about Yaki Teppan in Bayan Baru I blogged earlier, this is the real deal. The teriyaki sauce is so thick and tasty, you will feel that you are getting your money’s worth.

chicken teriyaki

The variety of Japanese foods here is awesome. You can get almost anything you want here from sushi to teriyaki to sashimi.

sushi sifu

This is the sushi sifu standing by to prepare sushi upon orders. It was quite enjoyable to see him prepare the sushis while we were having our dinner.

green tea

Our starter and green tea. I don’t know what exactly the starter was but it was meaty and tasted weird to me.. Can anyone identify it?

chicken teriyaki

This is the thing you must try, Teriyaki Chicken. Matsuki certainly was not stingy with the teriyaki sauce as you can see. The color of the meat is so dark and looks rich and thick. Other restaurants would be stingy and pan fry the chicken with more oil.. making the dish watery and lack of taste. I didn’t really believe it when told it was this good.. but yeah it’s true.

curry katsu don

Another set we ordered was the Curry Katsu Don.. which is translated to curry chicken chop rice. The curry gravy with lots of diced potatoes is served separately. It’s quite unique don’t you think?

curry katsu don

I don’t know how authentic this Japanese curry is, but it certainly tasted good and different from our local curries. It’s thick, not too spicy and I don’t think coconut milk was used. The chicken chop’s portion is huge and because I enjoyed it so much, I ordered an extra bowl of rice.

salad

Oh yeah each set comes with miso soup, salad and fruit. I think it’s a better deal considering it’s the same price of RM16-18 you pay for a set in YakiTeppan.

matsuki penang

Matsuki is located along Cantonment Road, which is opposite Bangkok Lane. Highly recommended if you want to have good teppanyaki. And best of all if you come during lunch time, there’s a complimentary scoop of Haagen Dazs ice cream for every set meals ordered. And one scoop of Haagen Dazs ice cream would already cost like RM5-6 so it’s really worth it!

This is their full address and contact:

Japanese curry is one of my favorite! Over here in London, I get my fix from curry cubes from Japan Centre at Piccadilly Circus.

Was wondering why the ‘katsu’ seems abit dark… is it because of the oil used? Hmm…

If you eat beef, try their sukiyaki. It’s the best in Penang. Their Tori Karaage (fried chicken) and Potato Korokke is also nice. You can order both as side dishes as they do serve it ala carte!

they change the starters pretty often, so I don’t actually know what it was :P
Matsuki is my all-time-favourite Japanese restaurant - of course i’m a huge lover of its Teriyaki Chicken until the people there will say ‘Teriyaki Chicken?’ whenever they take my order
it’s very near my house and I like how I can just drive in, park my car, hop off and eat! :)
