White Wantan Mee @ Tua Pek Kong Bukit Mertajam

July 10, 2008

If there should be a most iconic food for Bukit Mertajam 大山脚, it would be none other than the noodles sold beside BM’s Tua Pek Kong Temple. It has been given a lot of names from White Wantan Mee to Tok Tok Mee to Tokong Mee. However, most people I came across prefer to call it White Wantan Mee. I think this is because it’d sound more recognizable for the masses and also create curiosity for strangers of Bukit Mertajam. Now, wouldn’t you want to know how wantan mee looks and tastes like, in white?

white wantan mee

If you knew my blog long enough, you’d know that I’ve blogged about this noodle in the past. But, I still feel that this awesome noodle is not getting enough exposure and popularity it deserves. Hence, another post dedicated to it again. Well, a BM Kia gotta do what he’s gotta do - to promote his hometown’s food.
Anyway, I’ve been enjoying the noodles here ever since I could remember. My siblings and I would follow mother to the market to do the weekly shopping. Then, enjoy a bowl or two here for breakfast. The price remained unchanged at RM2.50 since the last increment few years ago.

tokong mee

Only this can make me get up at 6.30am on a lazy Sunday morning, no matter how late I slept the night before lol. The ingredients used to prepare a delicious bowl include the noodles they make themselves, choy sam, char siew and wantan. Then, mixed with soya sauce and soup boiled using pig bones (I think). The taste is somewhere between Sarawak’s Kolo Mee and a very much less oily version of Hakka Noodle you could get in KL.

This is the uncle I’ve seen him preparing the noodles for more than 20 years. They rarely rest unless it’s public holiday, Chinese New Year or they are on a holiday to China. There are morning and noon sessions which are handled by a different cook.
Some people prefer the noon one but I prefer the one in the morning. There’s a slight difference in taste but the noodle’s presentation varies a lot. Since there are generally more customers in the mornings, the noodles’ preparation is more rushed.

Bukit Mertajam White Wantan Mee is located right next to the temple. If you are still unsure, I have put up an arrow in the photo pointing at the entrance to the stall.

The size of the mee looks different from those sold in Penang. They called it white wan tan mee …is it because they did not add in the thick black sauce?

VK. Thanks for the directions . Got to the Tua Pek Kong without any problems at 1 pm but it was already closed. What time does he usually close ? But not a total loss as I had the Koay Teow Thng next to it which was pretty good.

VK: Hi PenangGuy, it depends on what day you went. If it’s Sunday, it will close by noon. If it’s a weekday, then it will usually open till 3-4pm. Luckily you tried the koay teow thng/bee chai mak stall, it is also one of the nice stalls in BM.. the chili sauce is just great!

The morning uncle makes the noodles for the afternoon uncle so he stops selling at 11.00am sharp then the afternoon uncle takes over, they have been there ages I been eating there from my school days and that when the morning uncle father was the owner of the shop, they were both working in panfibric factory B4 taking over the stall, one stall just in front selling “kway chup” also is very good but with all the pork spare parts in it, not much people like to go for it but I personally loves it,
Do not see any write-up about this stall

yeps…I usually get there once a week. But sometimes its a bit dry. yummy…

vk: You’re right. The noodles’ taste won’t be consistent. I have a feeling it’s done according to the cook’s mood lol. I notice that when he prepares the noodles hurrily when there are plenty of cusomters, it tastes nicer haha

I am from Bukit Mertajam, though I am not so favour about the wantan mee but my sisters and brothers must take the wantan mee there together with our parent whenever we were home. My parent know the boss for many years.

Another famous food as this wantan mee at the place is mi tai mak (low sui fan), must try if you were there next time.

vk: Yeap the mi tai mak is nice as well.. love the chili sauce!
