Rock Road Seafood Restaurant in Kuching, Sarawak

January 9, 2008

The first seafood restaurant I went during my trip in Kuching was Rock Road Seafood Restaurant. It is one of the recommended restaurants for seafood in our travel guide book. Since my buddy Prim3 and also my tour guide also said the food there is not bad, we decided to try it.

rock road seafood restaurant

The restaurant has a website and honestly I think the design is terrible. They definitely need to redesign it, and I tell you, the waiter in the photo on the main page was the one who attended to us that night lol, I still can remember him.

seafood

Quite plenty of seafood to choose from. All their signature dishes and the prices are displayed on the wall.

curry-bamboo-clams

Bamboo clams fried with curry powder is one of the must try dishes in Sarawak, also as mentioned in our guide book. It is quite true as most of the restaurants here have this as one of their signature dishes. The clams are unshelled and fried together with lots of cucumber and onions. The unshelled clams make eating easier but the taste was disappointing, I found the curry taste was not strong enough. If only they put more curry powder.. it’d be great.

fried-oysters

Fried oyster is also one of the popular seafood in Sarawak. Their version of fried oyster is omelette like and the oysters are concentrated in the center. The eating style is also different! We were given light soya sauce with Sarawak’s most famous seasoning - pepper to dip in with. I didn’t find this tasty too. In fact it was kind of a weird experience for me to eat fried oysters like this lol. Maybe I am too used to Penang hawkers’ fried oysters, that’s my favorite.

prawns

Sweet sour prawns that are really delicious. The prawns are huge sized and the gravy was great for dipping in the buns.

buns

This is very similar to eating Penang and KL’s sweet sour crab. If you are wondering how it’s like, do take a look at my Bukit Tambun’s seafood post and scroll down to the bottom.

mirin-vegetable

Lastly, a very unique looking vegetable that’s only available in Sarawak according to my buddy, making it a specialty and also a must try if you ever travel there. They taste like kangkung (water convolvulus) but crunchier. Best way to cook them is to stir fry with belacan, as shown above. The bill came to a total of RM90+ if I remembered correctly and I must say it’s quite pricey. For that price I can have a heavenly seafood meal in Prawn Village.. So what do you think?

Hmm..Is Penang lang and Kuching lang taste bud really that different? Kenny Sia blogged that he don’t like Penang Laksa when he went to Penang. He prefer Kuching’s Laksa.

I still prefer Penang Seafood compare to Kuching. I have been there last year to my sister’s place and try their seafood. I find that the seafood is very expensive, small portion and not nice too.

Simon, yes Penang laksa and Sarawak laksa are very different. The soup is a bit taste like our Penang curry mee. For more details about Sarawak Laksa please visit:

@Simon, it’s not that different I tell you. If compare Kuching’s and Penang’s laksa, I prefer Kuching’s. But you can’t compare them like that because it’s like comparing apple to orange. They are totally different food that just happen to share the same name. I love Kuching’s kolo mee leh.

@Steven Goh, Yes I find their seafood really expensive. From my conversation with another KL couple who went there for vacation, they also felt it’s more expensive than in KL.. I wonder if we went to all the wrong places??

    Hm, SEAFOOOOOD! XD
I’ve never eaten that type of oyster too. Although I don’t really eat them. XD
RM90+ for that few dishes, quite expensive.

I think can get quite a lot of nice ones already near Bukit Merah there. o_O

Vkeong, i think you went to the wrong place for seafood as Rock Road Seafood Restaurant is more like upscale restaurant. There are other places that offered affordable seafoods and nice too. For example like Permata Seafood behind Crown Plaza, etc.

Ohya, the bamboo clams taste much better if the shell are cooked with it. :)

After 10 years, ordinary labour personnel base income remained same in Kuching. But the local delicacies price shoot sky high like nobody business.

The price of a cup of coffee in the regular coffee shop can compete with the developed country like Hong Kong or Singapore. It was like Malaysian Ringgit RM1.20 - RM1.80 per small cup. A bowl of Wanton Mee or local Kolo Mee minimum @ least RM3.50. I was shocked and pitied to those middle class as well as low wages income people.

It’s been 6 years one of my best friend got married there. Total combination monthly income for both is roughly about RM5K. Yet they couldn’t afford to have a child.

This is terribly crazy, as the lifestyle there is low but then the expenses is higher than expected.

There are a hundred-and-one fantastic eating places in Kuching but you need to be familiar with the city to know where they are located. However Kuching city is not terribly famous for seafood. For this you will need to go out to nearby Buntal, Santubong, etc… or further to Kabong, etc… That where we locals go to tuck into seafood.

    Yo NYC

You are exegerrating too much man. Nett income 5k still cant afford to have children? haha yeah right! Im from Kch, my parent net income is 4k and my mother is a housewife and I ve 4 siblings. Yet we ve no problem living in Kuching happily. Dont bluff man. Kuching is not Singapore or HK, take it slow,

Btw, Rock Road is quite expensive for seafood, you guys can try some other places in town without travel to far to Buntal, Santubong or KABONG?? [are u nuts? its more than 4 hours drive man!] that cheaper like Benson Seafood at Abell Road, or Pending Seafood [alot of choices] or u can try somewhere at Lumba Kuda there, dont remember the name.

hahaha, ya…its true ley…non-kuching residents dont really know a thing. kuching and penang laksa? of course they are as different as the spelling. and for goodness sake, rock road seafood is a pricey place.

for good laksa, go to the laksa stall next to the mini police station at hui sing garden. run by a big-size brother and sister team, the laksa soup is to die for. a big cup of kopi o in the shop is only 1 ringgit, the cheapest in town. stall no 8 at permata food centre has the largest portion of jngle fern (midin) and their curried ambal has thick curry paste in it

for those who love wildboar + river terrapin soup —river tortise to the unskooled–PIJERU CAFE along the Bau-Serikin Road is your best money for value, man state ministers go there to eat, half a kilo of fried wild boar is ablut 34 ringgit!!
