My most expensive cendol ever RM271.20 @ Bukit Tengah, Penang
| Share |
Yup you seen it right, it’s RM271.20 for a bowl of cendol. It was my most expensive cendol ever and I have only myself to blame. After placing my order and while walking towards my seat in the food court behind the cendol stall, my camera bag slipped off my shoulder and dropped on the cement floor.
Although I carried my bag really low about two feet from the ground, the impact was strong enough to damage my 50mm lens so badly it was rendered useless – partly thanks to the plastic build. Oh well, lesson learnt, gotta put more padding in my cheapo camera bag and carry it with more care.
I have heard many good stuff about this cendol stall operated by an Indian family just opposite Peng Bin primary school at Bukit Tengah. Some even commented that it’s so good it’s better than the famous one at Penang Road, which in my opinion is already very awesome. So, I just gotta give it a try and verify the claims myself.
Well, the good thing about the cendol was the bigger portion and a lot of the green starch ‘noodles’ was given. Other than that it was pretty normal tasting and personally, I feel it wasn’t even comparable to Penang Road’s.
And if you noticed, the green ‘noodles’ was fatter and shorter with a pretty bad texture too – being stiff and taste mushy when the teeth sunk in. The desired jelly feeling just wasn’t there.
If you were a Peng Bin student then you would know about this cendol stall. For RM1.20 a bowl I know shouldn’t be expecting too much but I had high hopes due to the many recommendations. Takeaways cost extra RM0.30 for each packet. Map via Wikimapia
In case you are wondering, I went and buy a 50mm replacement the next day in Penang, which cost me RM270. Luckily the old one had served me at least a year before retiring permanently so I was not that heartache lol.

LOL…. if only you spent the RM270 in the first place for a well padded bag. Your new 50mm is still unprotected
vk: lol i am still using the old bag.. but will be more careful when carrying it now

I am worried too after reading your post. I am just using the given camera bag which I am not too sure whether it gives enough protection or not.
I went to check out the padded bags and found that most of them are very expensive.

All your food snap using 50mm f1.8 ??
is really sharp n nice.
vk: Hi David.. not all really. Like this cendol photo.. it was taken using kit lens coz I broke my 50mm that day so it was unusable
For the rest.. mostly are taken using 50mm.. depends on the situation
about 3 years ago
oic .. like this cendol photo , mind to tell me what is your setting?
i still not get use of manual mode. haihz.. and those flower u snap in cameron using 50mm ??
vk: Hi David, I use AV mode most of the time and I shoot in RAW format
So I edit the photos in Canon DPP later, crop in lightroom and finally import to Photoshop to insert the watermarks. About the flowers.. yeah they were shot using 50mm.. not satisfied with the results :/
about 3 years ago
oic , shoot in AV mode then the aparture ?? f5.6 ??
sorry for asking noob question ..
i just got my 1000d last week and only normal lens..
not really get use to it
do u think i should buy 50mm ? u happy with it ??
thanks
vk: for me, 50mm is a must buy lens because of the cheap price, good performance and great image quality. can do well in very low light.
anyway to answer your question, what aperture to use is solely up to you. using a smaller aperture like f7 and above would give you a very clear photo while big aperture from 1.8 to 3.5 give a bokeh effect (subject clear, background blur)
do note that small aperture = longer shutter speed. so your hand has to be steady to get clear image but it wouldn’t be a problem if you’re in a bright area.

oic .. i don’t hav Canon DPP and lightroom .. hehe
u download from web or u buy ?
vk: DPP usually comes in the CD when you buy your camera. while lightroom you have to purchase it. actually lightroom is pretty much optional
