Jawi Laksa (Wan Li Laksa) @ Taman Mutiara, Bukit Mertajam

If you are tired of eating the same old Penang Assam Laksa at all the already renowned places in the island, there is an alternative.
In Jawi (a small town in the mainland side of Penang) there is a famous laksa stall called Wan Li Laksa, or more commonly known as Jawi Laksa. Located next to Jawi’s Tua Pek Kong temple, it is a favorite with the locals as well as the neighboring towns.
As much as I wanted to show the laksa from the original stall, I was just too lazy to drive all the way to Jawi just to have a bowl of it. Another reason is because Wan Li Laksa has a branch in Taman Mutiara, Bukit Mertajam, which is just 5 min away from my house. So why travel so far for the same thing lol.
Wan Li Laksa’s signature features are being served in a plate instead of in a bowl, bundled up laksa noodles that is own made and prawn fritters are given as topping.
Taste wise it is not as sourish as the island’s Assam Laksa counterparts. The gravy is not as thick as well giving a smoother feel. If you find Assam Laksa too sourish to handle (like me) then try Jawi Laksa for a change.
Each serving cost RM2.20 and as you can see the laksa noodles look bundled up – I don’t know exactly why.
If the laksa doesn’t look appetizing, there’s nothing much I can do, since it was indeed served that way lol. But trust me, it is delicious, especially when taken with prawn fritters. Because of this some people even order their laksa with prawn fritters only!
Char Koay Teow here is quite good, they are not from the same stall though.
Jawi Laksa can be found at Lau Yu Coffee Shop, Taman Mutiara. The laksa is delivered fresh from Jawi everyday in a van. The business is not as brisk as the one at Jawi so you don’t have to worry about not getting you Assam Laksa fix.

Is this similar to the Mee Jawa? Coz that also consist of prawn fritters but the soup base is more peanuty. I wish that they have a branch here in KL this Jawi Laksa.
