Sentul Ah Yap Hokkien Mee @ Damansara Utama, FAIL
This was quite possibly one of my worst dinner experiences ever. As soon as I came back from Taiwan I immediately craved for Nasi Lemak. Many suggestions led me to Village Park at Damansara Utama but too bad it was already closed when we reached there.
So, we decided to give one of the two Hokkien Mee restaurants a try, both located at the same row with Village Park. Both restaurants’ business were equally good too, so good they had their tables stretched to two of their neighboring shop lots. Looking at the huge crowd of customers we thought to ourselves, we must give them a try!
We chose Sentul Ah Yap Hokkien Mee, which had the oldest cook who impressed us with high flames while frying his Hokkien Mee. How wrong we were to think that his experience would be an added advantage. Sometimes, even large number of customers at a restaurant isn’t an indication of good food. It was really a rare and unlucky thing to happen on us that night.
Hokkien Mee @ RM6, ok-ok at best. The HUGE amount of lard didn’t do any good to save the dish. What I had in Kota Kinabalu at a random seafood restaurant was wayyyyy better than this. And the irony is, the seafood restaurant is not specialized in Hokkien Mee at all.
Their Special Hokkien Mee @ RM7, said to use self made tapioca noodles. Fail, because it was too chewy and didn’t taste like Hokkien mee, at all.
One of their signature dishes, Deep Fried Mantis Prawns with Western Wheat @ RM15. Fail, because it was rock hard and caused me toothache.
Fried Beef Koay Teow (干炒牛河) @ RM7. Fail, because it was bland tasting and no wok hei was present at all. I felt like eating economy fried koay teow, or worse.
Kangkung Sambal Belacan @ RM7. Fail, because it was too salty.
Besides the fails mentioned above, even the drinks and waiter failed. My order of fresh cucumber juice with sour plum didn’t come with any sour plum. LOL fail. The waitress who picked our order and sent our food was coughing like mad in the restaurant with her mouth wide open. Free virus? Fail. I pray hard she was H1N1 free lol.
So, I guess you should know the word I am going to use to describe Sentul Ah Yap Hokkien Mee at Damansara Utama. Nope, no prize for guessing the word correctly.

Yeah, this shop serves really bad Hokkien Mee. Their Wah Tan Hor is even worse with texture like phlegm. Notice how slow the uncle cook? I think that’s why the place was so crowded.

lol. I noticed the uncle only dishes out hokkien mee while the rest of the food comes from the kitchen at the back. but maybe you’re right, crowded because people are waiting for the hokkien mee…

Uncle heng still serves the best hokkien mee in PJ when ur desperate and must have a good 1. Cause he’s less commercialized compare to ah wah’s which can dish out something below par at peak hrs.

July 16, 2009 - 6:11 pm
hi, i think I gotta stress out that I didn’t mention the Hokkien Mee was bad, it was just so-so, it was below the standard I expected from a restaurant specializing in Hokkien Mee. only the rest of the dishes were bad
July 16, 2009 - 7:25 pm
The fried kuay teow does not look good at all. Thanks for the thumbs up
July 18, 2009 - 11:46 pm
Trust me..the best hokkien mee i have ever had and still having is located opposite Petaling Street. To be precise, after u drive passed Central Market (on ur left) for about 200 meters, on your left u can see a stall in a lorong. The appearance of this stall may not very appealing but their Hokkien Mee is godness. It is also fried using charcoal. Definately can feel its ‘Wok Hei”.Recommend to order their fried “mee sin’ and ‘loh mee’.
Pls visit this place and do a review on it.
July 25, 2009 - 6:12 pm
Place crowded with people who all left their tastebud at home.
Ah Yap is AVERAGE hokkien mee only.
Who think it taste fantastic, please take a look outside of the coconut shell you live in.
August 2, 2009 - 3:25 pm
try the one behind uptown public bank, called Damansara Hokkien Mee ( hopefully i don get d name correct).
August 14, 2009 - 5:25 pm
Strongly agree with you, Keong. The first time i visited, their food is so-so, not to say very “Fail”. But after the second time visit, I marked “No entry” for the shop. For my second visit, we ordered Hokkien Mee, Squid in Butter Milk Gravy, & Foo Yu Lettuce. The Hokkien Mee, came with lots of black-dark color carbon, extra “mineral” for us,OMG! I guess they didnt waste the Wok properly.. Haha. Abt Squid in Butter Milk Gravy, it was served exactly like Deep Fried Mantis Prawns with Western Wheat that keong published above. I asked the Waiter to come over & start our below conversation
“I ordered Butter Milk Gravy Sotong right?”,, “Yes”,,”then I think this is not our order”,, “no, this is ur order”,,”but we ordered butter milk gravy sotong”,,”Yes, this is Sotong!!’,, “Then Where is the BUTTER MILK GRAVY??!!”,,” This is Sotong What!!!”
GOSH~~~~ *Vomitted Blood….. Finally I got them, they wrongly translated the Squid dishes in english by pandai pandai add on the “GRAVY” word.. TPity us to finish the “Rocky” Deep Fried Squid without any butter milk.. Foo Yu Lettuce, salty salty salty… Sigh..
