Hokkien Mee @ Cheok Sah Food Court, Bukit Mertajam
| Share |
I was about to give up hope on looking for a good Hokkien Mee (or known as Prawn Noodle to non Penangites) at Bukit Mertajam until I found a hidden small hawker centre next to the old Cheok Sah cinema known by locals as Cheok Sah food court. Honestly, being a BM resident for more than 20 years I didn’t even realize it existed lol.
For RM4 you get a honest bowl of Hokkien Mee with pork ribs, some halved prawns and lean pork slices.
The soup looks clear but it certainly did not lack the sweet prawn flavor, it was satisfyingly good until the last drop. Good thing MSG was not heavily used to achieve the taste, as I didn’t feel the side effects after that.
A husband and wife team manages the stall and I was surprised to know they live quite near to my house.. I used to see the husband cycling around my neighbourhood!
Huge bowl of nicely pan fried prawns.. wonder how many bowls of Hokkien Mee can be prepared with that. The vibrant orangish color sure made them looked extra appetizing.
Overall it is good and tops my current recommendation for Hokkien Mee in BM – heaps better than the one opposite Cheok Sah, although I should also mention that it is still not awesome as those sold in Penang island.
Besides Hokkien Mee you will also find Laksa (said to be equally good as well), Ais Kacang, Bubur Cha Cha and Jawa Mee here. The environment and table settings here will remind you of what things were during the 70s and 80s – wooden stalls and steel tables and chairs, nothing much really changed.
Cheok Sah food court is located opposite Choon Lai coffee shop next to the cinema. Use the alley in between for access. Don’t worry it’s very safe even though it looks a bit dodgy and from outside.

The Prawn Mee (non penangite) really looks good. There’s not much of these nice stall around KL nowadays.

This place use to be a popular place for afternoon meal when Cheok Sah cinema still operating. Laksa and Hokkien Mee, Jawa Mee (you didn’t write about Jawa Mee, may be they are gone?) were my favorites, but that was about 20 years ago…not sure the quality now.
