328 Famous Katong Laksa @ East Coast Road
I love Katong Laksa, it has to be the one of the hawker food I have eaten the most since coming to Singapore. For me, having a good bowl of piping hot laksa with a can of ice cool Sarsi under a hot weather is a bliss. And it’s a great way to experience the common daily life of an average Singaporean too. I aim to try all the delicious laksa in the island before I head back to Malaysia, because it will definitely be on my list of missed Singapore food.
When it comes to popularity, without a shout of a doubt 328 Katong Laksa @ East Coast Road has it. The shop’s wall is full of photos of famous Hong Kong and Taiwan celebrities who have eaten here and given their share of thumbs up. However, famous as they might be, for me it’s only the taste that matters most.
There is nothing fancy about 328 Katong Laksa, the ingredients are more or less the same (short cut bihun, fish cakes, cockles, prawns and bean sprouts) compared to the rest so it’s only the gravy that sambal that could really make a difference.
Although I ordered the smallest bowl, the portion was still satisfactory – just nice for me. The thick coconut gravy tasted smooth and appetizing, nice. But somehow it lacked a special ‘oomph‘ that is detected in Marine Parade’s Laksa. My personal preference is still with Marine Parade Laksa because of their grainier and thicker gravy, which has more dried shrimps.
At 328 Katong Laksa the sambal paste is on the table for you to add according to your own spiciness tolerance.
The otak here was quite good as well, $1 a piece – soft with chunks of fish meat to give a contrasting texture. A good after-laksa snack if you ask me.
All in all 328 Katong Laska is pretty good and there’s an air-conditioned seating area if you can’t tolerate the heat. Recommended but if I would prefer cross the street to the old Roxy Square for my favorite, and less crowded Marine Parade Laksa heh.

Ooooh I love Katong Laksa! Back when “bubble tea” was still the in thing… I used to cycle to Katong and pack Cool Station bubble tea to go with my Laksa…
Yummmyyy…

What does Katong actually means? Or is it just a name? Love Otak2. So I think will give it a try if I visit S’pore next time.
