Penang Char Koay Teow @ Sun Hin Loong Restaurant, SS2
Being unable to look for a Char Koay Teow that tastes as good as those in Penang is one of my major frustrations in food while working in Klang Valley. So I am glad to have found one that is able to fry up an authentic tasting plate of Penang Char Koay Teow, which is ironically so near to me all this time – the stall in Sun Hin Loong at SS2 just next to Watsons.
I know this might be old news but this entry is actually dedicated to you Penangites out there who are working in Klang Valley like me. If you wish to have a fix of some authentic Penang Char Koay Teow, this is the place to be.
There are countless Char Koay Teow stalls in Klang Valley that include the word ‘Penang’ into their stall name but the taste is always far from being close. After a while I just gave up the search totally. But recently a close friend managed to convince me to try Sun Hin Loong’s, because his recommendations usually won’t go wrong.
If you wish, you could have extra prawns for an additional RM2 (normal price RM4.50) But do note that the number of prawns given are not fixed, more towards size I guess. So you could get 8 regular sized prawns or 5 large ones. Nevertheless, they are sweet and sea-fresh with a nice crunch, just scrumptious.
As for the noodle, there isn’t much ‘wok hei’ going on but tastes very spicy even at the regular level. Not oily at all too. For Penangites, the best way to describe this CKT is that it’s a cross between Gurney Drive’s (Cantonment Road Famous CKT, super spciy one) and Ah Leng‘s (large succulent prawns)

How can you tell if a char kuey teow is really authentic or not? Is there a difference?
Sorry for asking such ignorant questions. I’m no expert in char kuey teow.

It’s something that comes natural to us Penangites, when you grow up eating so many good ones, you would know
But generally a good CKT must have ‘wok hei’, without this, it is fail even if it’s from Penang

I’ve always walked past the place, but never went in before for some reason or another, which is not an excuse as a native PJ resident.
But I’ll bear that in the mind the next I’m in the area craving for CKT.

this is another makan trip whenever i come to visit my sis in USJ. tried this stall in the coffee shop. i walked around the shop to check if there are more than one CKT stalls. found only one stall manned by an old man whose stall has 2 woks. he actually uses the 2 woks , apparently they help him increase the productivity as well as the ‘wok hei’ .
ALAS !!! the color of the CKT was not what it is shown here in the blog ( haaa, have i found the correct stall ??? but the color of the chopsticks is the same) . was not spicy, was indeed BLAND ! prawns were crunchy and had peppery taste. the clams were tiny. as noted by vkeong, it was totally lack of ‘wok hei’ . the first mouthful was all it took to write off this stall from my list forever.
surprisingly , i noticed quite a few people ordered the CKT . i have had much better CKT elsewhere. sister will show me in the next few days and i shall provide details.

as i said few days ago in this blog, i went to 2 more places in KL to try CKT. glad to say that they are far more superior than the one i tried few days ago at Sun Hing Loong. one is at USJ 16 , a shop by itself with a big signboard called Big Sister CKT. the other one is at USJ 19/6 where the famous Mian Fen Gao (面粉粿) is (corner coffee shop Restoran Lian Hing) . although they are not as good as those in Penang, they are ok.
only if i have gone to the wrong stall at SunHingLoong, i shall never go there again.
anyone care to comment ?

hi people, the CKT stall @ ss2 sun hing loong is actually owned by my dad since 1980s for more than 30 years, it’s also the place that we have grew up, we family used to help out at my dad’s stall when we were still studying. I like CKT a lot and grow up eating so many different CKT, still i like my dad’s CKT, i would say people who prefer the so called “penang style” fried kuey teow, i think they will like it. lots of uncles and aunties are my dad’s kuey teow fans eating for many yrs and still craving for it.
My dad open the stall from around 11am to 1am mid night. Break time around 4pm -8pm.
thanks for all the fair comments. =)

hi Kuey Teow Mui, thank you for the info. I went to your father’s stall last night (Monday) but was disappointed that he did not open. Is Monday a rest day?
Appreciate if you could provide the info
Thanks for dropping by!

I went there four years ago when i was introduced by a friend. Out to my surprised, the CKT was really one tradisional style same as the one famous in Penang. Btw, I didnt know it was there for the past 30years.. Must be really good to sustain at the same place for the past 30years.
Was surprised with the reasonably price as well too !
Conclusion, Worth the go for all CKT lovers ! By looking at the pictures, I think i’m going there tonight after my work !

Monday is not the rest day. So coincident yesterday my dad was not feeling well and closed earlier in the afternoon.
No specific rest day actually. Apologize for that.
Glad to see your comment here vkeong.

Hey there, I just came back from your father’s stall.. the koay teow was great
I was thinking of approaching him to pose for a pic but I am kinda scared he wouldn’t want to.
Do you think you could convince him to do so? lol. tell him I am a blogger

hi vkeong, thanks for the compliment and hope u like my father’s cook. =D
LoL…i know my father acts a little bit ‘cool’ to customers, rarely smile. but i think he won’t mind to pose for a pic, it was sometime the old customers like to approach my father for pic. with them The pic gonna b a memorable one, he is getting older and soon to retire. =)

This CKT stall does not use lard, and therefore, it does not has the typical aroma that comes with those served in Penang. Also, the kway teow lacks wok hei – frying time too short.

I have been in KL for 40 years. I have yet to find a CKT stall that can prepare a plate of CKT that is close to those found in Penang.

I’ve lived in the US for the last 5 years for school and now work. Everytime someone asks me what I miss about home I tell them the food(well my family comes first but the food is a close second). And by food I mean this damn CKT place at Sun Hing Loong. My dad grew up eating it and I grew up eating it. I’ve been visualizing this plate of CKT with the raw cockels and succulent shrimps for months and finally on a lonely friday night my cravings become so strong that I actually googled ss2 CKT. Alas!It got me here and when I see the picture of the CKT, I almost died. I always go to SHL at night for yumcha just so I can eat the CKT and I’ll be heading back home for vacation end of the year after not being home for 2+ years. I’ve planned to have this as my first meal one I land! Kuay Teow mui, please pass this message to your dad: Thanks for giving my taste buds the best flavor and I look forward to eating your dad’s CKT again. Hopefully he will not retire so soon.
