Nyonya Cendol & Kuih @ East & West Rendezvous Cafe, Lorong Hang Jebat (Jonker Street)

Move over Jonker 88, I have found a better Durian Cendol in Melaka at East & West Rendezvous cafe. You are famous alright – buzzing with tourist customers for almost anytime of the day and there is no doubt your cendols are decent. But to endure the long queue for a bowl? It just ain’t worth my time and sweat anymore.

This is by far the best Durian Cendol I have had in Melaka and it is still relatively under-appreciated due to the fact that everyone still flocks to Jonker 88. East & West Rendezvous’ signature Nyonya Cendol has finely shaved ice that is almost fluffy and flavored with 100% Gula Melaka.
The difference is quite noticeable at the first tasting. Besides being more fragrant, its overall sweetness is just right and the dollop of real durian flesh (instead of using syrup) are very good too. So even if I try, there is nothing worth nitpicking about.

A friendly aunt-nephew duo of Peranakan descendant who were seated opposite urged us to try the Nyonya kuih here, especially the Nyonya Chang (dumpling). Seeing that the cendol is great and even the locals recommend it, there is simply no reason not to try.
And true to their words, the Nyonya Chang is really delicious with a strong, distinctively rempah udang fragrance. The fillings are authentic with pretty generous portions too like pork belly (yes, pork – just the way it should be), mushroom and wintermelon. If not because we were on a food hunt and had to reserve space for other foods, we would have had seconds for sure.

Before we left we had the privilege of witnessing the Nyonya Chang making process. The blue coloring on the glutinous rice is all natural – using colors extracted from Butterfly Pea flowers.

To avoid any disappointments, better call up ahead and reserve your dumplings or kuih because they sell out like crazy. It is not uncommon to see customers coming in and tapau fifty to hundred dumplings at once to be brought back to their hometowns because that is what we saw. And before you know it, no more Nyonya kuih and Chang for you.

    I also find that the cendol at Jonker88 is overrated, but I guess it’s mainly because it’s a touristy place. Now that you recommend another shop, maybe it’s good to give it a try the next time I’m in Malacca.

    sorry to burst your bubble…the blue is NOT from blue pea flower extract. If really from blue pea flower, the blue is not that kind…look so lebam. As a local, this is the first time I’m hearing abt this place….

    the cendol is a waste of money…though she uses fresh santan but the santan is not a rich and aromatic. My hometown still makes the best cendol ever tasted. Nothing compared to the cendol in Melaka.. If you are interested you should come to Sitiawan. James cendol in front of the temple. Their ingredients are all freshly home made. Simply simple yet super delicious..
