Restoran E Soo Yong Tou Foo @ Bandar Manjalara, Kepong

E Soo (Cantonese for 2nd sister in law) is an extremely popular Yong Tau Fu restaurant in Kepong and it is not difficult to understand why. Not only your food arrives fast even during the busiest times, there are plenty of other main dishes to order too which makes a meal here really quick and complete.

Yong-Tau-Fu

The sizes of the individual YTF here is delightfully big and packed with fish paste, so we did not really mind them being slightly pricier than the rest. Besides, they are really tasty too except for some fried items that were just plain oily to the extent of being inedible.

The fried item I was referring too is the friend brinjals, they were so soaked in oil that it felt like biting into a greasy and soggy tissue, kind of gross. We complained about this to the staff and owner but our complaint was simply brushed off with something along the lines of ‘fried brinjals are like that one mah, sure got a lot of oil, even if I replace for you also will like that‘ So yeah, no more fried brinjals for us in our future visits since the other restaurants do not seem to have this problem. The rest was OK though – we liked their fried ‘fu cuk’ and ‘tau fu pok’, both were crispy and light with very little grease.

Curry-Pork-Ribs

Being a lover of pork ribs curry and seeing it available on their menu, I simply could not pass on ordering it. While not the most awesome I have had it was still a good fix for my ribs curry craving. The rich gravy has a strong spice flavor that goes really well with rice. Some other pork dishes I noticed on the menu are quite common like vinegar pork leg, ‘mui choy kau yoke‘ (stewed pork with preserved radish) and pork belly with yam. Seafood like steamed fish is also available here but honestly, that’s what seafood restaurants are for.

All in all, E Soo is a good all around restaurant that YTF lovers in Kepong could consider trying – while the other being Chan Chan (I miss their Fish Head Curry!) It would have gotten a more favorable opinion from me if they acknowledged the overly oily brinjals was an issue, and also did not choose be nonchalant about it.

Despite being in Manjalara so many times for steamboat, dimsum and western food, didn’t realised that this shop existed. Thanks to your recommendation, there’s another place for us to choose next time when we are back at my in-law’s place for dinner.

  3. I think the YTF shop behind it is much better. But if I compare these two shops with the one at the Kepong market, the one at the Kepong market is better.

  4. It is a pity the fried brinjal is oil soaked. They look absolutely good from the photo. But instant turn off when reading about it being so oily…
