Double Boiled Abalone & Dim Sum Buffet @ Ah Yat Abalone Forum Restaurant, Life Centre

Thanks to efficient advertising and the immense popularity of Ah Yat, his Abalone Forum restaurant always comes to mind first whenever the word ‘abalone’ is mentioned. It had never crossed our mind to have a meal here until we spotted a rather attractive deal on a group buying website.
For RM51.30/pax (exclusive of appetizers and tea) you get a double boiled whole abalone and dim sum buffet. We thought it was a good opportunity to come here because we usually spend about RM70-80 for a typical dim sum meal. And given Ah Yat’s reputation, we expect the food to be above average at the very least – even if it’s an oversea branch.

Service here is attentive and efficient, we were served almost immediately as soon as we sat down. The abalone in the double boiled soup is not very large as you can see but we did not think it was anything worth complaining about. Besides, a whole, albeit small sea cucumber is also present. Overall the soup was enjoyable and quite tasty, we just hope the flavors were genuine and not because of the magic of MSG.

For the dim sum buffet, you are presented with a badly photocopied ordering sheet with 40 items like steamed and fried dim sum, Chinese pastries, congee, roast pork, noodles and dessert. While waiting for our food to arrive, I took the a la carte menu from a neighbouring table and looked up the dim sum’s individual prices. Most of them are actually between RM7 to RM9 but keep in mind that Forum restaurant have always had promotions in the recent years (50% off weekdays, 30% on weekend) as advertised in newspapers.

Generally, the dim sum was just OK with no surprises. Nothing was bad but nothing was particularly remarkable either. So the only reason we would actually return is when we feel like stuffing ourselves silly with unlimited dim sum. So if you are seeking a truly delectable and satisfying dim sum experience, seek elsewhere.
