Kai See Sha Hor Fun & Fruit Rojak @ Kedai Makanan Loke Wooi Kee, Ipoh

Loke Wooi Kee may appear as an unassuming coffee shop to a passerby tourist (including me), but this is where you will find two very delicious hawker treats. They are Ipoh‘s unique ‘Kai See Sha Hor Fun‘ and fruit Rojak. I was brought here by a local girl whose family has been eating here regularly and it is no wonder why. The food is really good and best of all the experience feels genuinely Ipoh and void of the tourist masses.

The soup of the Hor Fun is slightly orangish from the addition of prawn oil. This infuses the already-tasty soup with a heightened fragrance and flavor that sets it apart from the rest. The toppings are pretty generous too, as you get a good portion of smooth and tender chicken meat and a couple of slices of prawns as well. RM4 for a small bowl of kueh teow, RM5 for big.

Rojak

I think I have been in KL for too long because when I was told that the Rojak here is good, I thought it was Indian Rojak (Pasembur) I am not really a fan of that so I was glad to know she meant fruit rojak. This is the first time I have seen rojak where the sauce and prawn crackers are served individually. In Penang or KL, they are always mixed in a bowl before serving. Anyway, I am not sure where the rojak sauce is sourced from but it tastes really good, even as good as those found in Penang. It costs RM3.80 for a small portion like this.
The dark and pungent rojak sauce is thick and gooey just like the way it should be and coated with finely crushed peanuts for maximum flavor. One thing I notice about rojak’s crackers (esp those in KL) is that they are usually just wafer thin, flavorless flour. Worse still, they get all soggy when coated in the rojak sauce. But here, the crackers are slightly thicker with a loud crunch and you could really taste the real prawn flavor in it.

Coupled with a cuppa of ice cold white coffee, this was a truly satisfying meal. Highly recommended.
