About Vkeong.com

(Last update: 23 Aug 10) Hey! Thanks for wanting to know me better :)

I’m a 27-year old guy, grew up in Bukit Mertajam aka “Tua Shua Kha” in Hokkien. It is a small town on the mainland side of Penang.

There are two reasons why I started this blog: passion for good food (I live to eat!) and photography. 4 years ago, there weren’t many food blogs and MalaysiaBest was my favorite at that time. It was my biggest influence in starting my own food blog. After taking thousands of photos, I am now more interested in photography compared to hunting for food to be honest. So, sometimes I eat or travel just for the sake of taking photos. Except working hours, I am never without my camera.

I do realize that my writings are simple, straightforward and not as narrative like other food blogs you may find. Or simply put, my English is not great. My blogging style is based on how I would like to read a food blog – I just want to see how the foods look like, know the location, the price and most importantly the taste. Nothing more.

But recently, I have changed my style of writing to include some history about the food that I blog. Videos and more detailed information like operating hours, address and the GPS Coordinates are also being included. This is something you will definitely not see in my older posts. Last time, I would just snap the food, secretly snap a photo of the shop and then run away lol. Anyway, I feel this change is good for me as mingling with the people who prepare your food does give you a good feeling about the food you are going to eat. Sometimes, their stories would even touch you.

Now, about food blogging.. it is no secret that I used to do the so called “invited reviews”. I never really liked that term because it gives an impression I am doing this for a living or professionally when in fact I am doing it as a hobby. I used to even put up a page to let restaurant owners contact me for “invited reviews” because not many food bloggers get this type of invitation stuff at that time. It made me felt honored and such lah, syok sendiri.

But after doing this for a while I felt my integrity and direction in blogging is affected. This aside, I also noticed there is a faction of food bloggers that blogs for money and often ask for free meals from restaurants. In order to stop myself from being associated with these bloggers, I have stopped responding to restaurant owners’ invitation. I have always worked independently and I am very glad with my way because believe it or not, there is politic stuff going on among the factions of food bloggers.

So if you see a chubby and specky looking guy in Penang who carries a camera around, eats alone and snaps photos of the food before he starts eating, most probably that’s me!

Hi vkeong, i am one of the food hunter too. I like to view your page. But how can I recommend some foods to you via your site? I like to hunt those food worth + nice, regardless of popularity. Some quality of foods will drop once it went popular.

Like the way you present your blog and the photos you have taken are just so “pro”. :-)
By the way, if you don’t mind, I have “kapo” some of your nice photos on Malacca to put in my blog. I do make a remark below the photo that it is from your blog. Is that ok?
Thank you for sharing all these lovely eating places, letting our eyes eat “ice cream”.

    Hey Vkeong,

Stumbled on your website whilst looking up the BM famous 3 brothers duck egg Char Koay Teow – I can’t wait to go try this the next time I’m in Penang. Love your blog, reminds me of Singapore’s IeatIshootIpost – but better!

Love your pictures as well – can you tell me what camera and lens you’re using? The colours are so vivid and the bokeh from your lens is magnificent!

Keep up the great work and a very Happy Chinese New Year to you!

    Cheers,

    Hi VKeong,

I am writing from The Miele Guide, and we are looking to call for bloggers to help us to rally their readers to vote for their favourite restaurants, for our 2011/2012 edition. Celebrating Asia’s best chefs and restaurants, The Miele Guide is an authoritative and independent annual publication which evaluates and ranks restaurants across the regions, which is determined by the votes of an invited jury, professional restaurant critics, a jury of respected foodies and the public.

Much of what the guide is about is really to rouse the dining public to become champions for their favorite restaurants, both across the region and in their own countries and cities. We hope to see others become just as involved as you and I are, translating our passion for good food by helping to bring Asia’s best into the international spotlight.

We are hoping to have your help to call for your readers to vote for their favourite restaurants, to champion Malaysia’s vibrant culinary scene, from street hawkers to fine dining establishments, giving them the recognition they deserve.

Furthermore, we understand your passion for food, and therefore would like to also offer the opportunity for you to win a pair of seats at this year’s The Miele Guide 2011/2012 Gala Dinner, to enjoy an evening of fine cuisine prepared by top chefs, as well as exclusive blogger access to interviewing the winning chefs of your choice at the dinner. The contest mechanics are such that the blogger who has the highest click-through rate through a Miele Guide web button on his or her blog, will win this particular privilege.

Voting for the 2011/2012 edition of The Miele Guide opens on http://www.mieleguide.com on 14 March 2011 and closes on 16 May 2011. The 2011/2012 edition will be available at all major bookstores come October.

Do get in contact with me at xiaomin@ateconsulting.net or +65-83888706 if you might like to know more about The Miele Guide. :) Thanks!

    Cheers,

We share the same taste. If you wanna go makan makan one day in kl, but no partner, give me a buzz..haha…

I’m also a photo lover (although I got no hardware), and am from teluk intan. If you need leads to TI good food, again, you have my contact.. :)

Very well said! And I surely agree that your writing is really straightforward. I admire you for not taking advantage on those privileges that you can get as a blogger. I mean there are a lot of them that are really enticing to grab. Sometimes people can’t refuse whenever their hobby turns out to be a way for them to earn money. Doing the thing that you like best while you earn money is really awesome, right? But some people only realized that when their hobbies intertwined with money, it gets so complicated. Sometimes it defeats the purpose of you doing it because you like it. You like to share. You like to help others. Not because you get money out of it. Good job on your blog. I hope you continue to inspire other people as much as you have inspired me now.
