vkeong loves good food, travel and photography!
About Vkeong.com
(Last update: 23 Aug 10) Hey! Thanks for wanting to know me better
I’m a 27-year old guy, grew up in Bukit Mertajam aka “Tua Shua Kha” in Hokkien. It is a small town on the mainland side of Penang.
There are two reasons why I started this blog: passion for good food (I live to eat!) and photography. 4 years ago, there weren’t many food blogs and MalaysiaBest was my favorite at that time. It was my biggest influence in starting my own food blog. After taking thousands of photos, I am now more interested in photography compared to hunting for food to be honest. So, sometimes I eat or travel just for the sake of taking photos. Except working hours, I am never without my camera.
I do realize that my writings are simple, straightforward and not as narrative like other food blogs you may find. Or simply put, my English is not great. My blogging style is based on how I would like to read a food blog – I just want to see how the foods look like, know the location, the price and most importantly the taste. Nothing more.
But recently, I have changed my style of writing to include some history about the food that I blog. Videos and more detailed information like operating hours, address and the GPS Coordinates are also being included. This is something you will definitely not see in my older posts. Last time, I would just snap the food, secretly snap a photo of the shop and then run away lol. Anyway, I feel this change is good for me as mingling with the people who prepare your food does give you a good feeling about the food you are going to eat. Sometimes, their stories would even touch you.
Now, about food blogging.. it is no secret that I used to do the so called “invited reviews”. I never really liked that term because it gives an impression I am doing this for a living or professionally when in fact I am doing it as a hobby. I used to even put up a page to let restaurant owners contact me for “invited reviews” because not many food bloggers get this type of invitation stuff at that time. It made me felt honored and such lah, syok sendiri.
But after doing this for a while I felt my integrity and direction in blogging is affected. This aside, I also noticed there is a faction of food bloggers that blogs for money and often ask for free meals from restaurants. In order to stop myself from being associated with these bloggers, I have stopped responding to restaurant owners’ invitation. I have always worked independently and I am very glad with my way because believe it or not, there is politic stuff going on among the factions of food bloggers.
So if you see a chubby and specky looking guy in Penang who carries a camera around, eats alone and snaps photos of the food before he starts eating, most probably that’s me!

pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.

Hello there,
I’m Charlie from Manta Grill Fish restaurant, Kota Damansara.
We would like ask you to review and promote our newly open restaurant.
Manta Grill Fish restaurant is actually a branch from HoChak (previously know as Chow Yang, near Kayu Nasi Kandar) & Sun Hing Long SS2.
Those two stalls had been operating since the pass ten years.
And this year my family plan to bring it to the next level, running a whole restaurant on our own.
One specialty is the Ikan Bakar. No we don’t use curry powder. We really bakar bakar it and the sambal are made out of prawns, belancan and all the good stuff.
We do have other HOT PANAS food such as TOM YAM SEAFOOD, NASI LEMAK, CURRY FISH, VEGE SAMBAL, SOTONG SAMBAL and many more.
Yes its all HOT and spice. Hungry yet?
Come over and review us. My treat (for 2-3 pax).
The address : Manta Grill Fish.
21-1, Jalan 5/4 Dataran Sunway, Kota Damasara.
Funny thing, its at the same roll as CHILI PAN MEE restaurant and CURRY FISH HEAD house. Maybe you can write a feature of all the spicy food? HEHE.
I really hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks !

Just wanna recommend you a Japanese at Alam Damai, Cheras. Coordinate is 3.07105, 101.74273
The name is Daimon Yokocho. I’m just a customer and I think it’s special because of this Pork Bone Soup Udon. It’s their trademark dish. If you like the sticky and condensed broth like the Klang BKT then you should try this dish. However it’s a daily limited dish so not sure if you can get it.
The menu is pretty long but expect only hot and cooked Japanese dishes (mainly udon and skewers) so no sushi or sashimi. There are some dishes marked ‘popular’ which you should try too like the beef fillet with cheese.
Price ranges from RM4-RM30 a dish but there is a special ‘pre-order’ only sea urchin dish that costs RM70.
So if you happen to drop by Cheras be sure to give it a try. Just sharing!

I’m part the team at hidden little gems – a Facebook app that helps you get recommendations of where to eat, drink, stay and what to do from people you trust – your friends. Here’s the link : apps.facebook.com/hiddenlittlegems
We’d love you to try out hidden little gems. Here’s an example of recent blogger’s list (on Nepal) e.g. Barbara Weibel http://www.hiddenlittlegems.com/List/ViewList/barbara-weibel/best-restaurants-in-pokhara-nepal-600 People are constantly asking their friends for suggestions. Instead of having to trawl through old emails, etc we think it would be great if you could just point people to your lists.
If you think this might be useful we’d love it if you’d add your favourite places to a list. You can add a link back to your blog at the top of the list to make sure people know where to go to find out more, because your blog is a really good source for all travellers. This list could drive our readers to your blog as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you & welcome any feedback or tips for the app you might have.
Find us to see the gems we’ve found already! @Hiddenlittlegem
We’ve also got a facebook page that will give you more information about our application

Wow, Vkeong. Wow. I love your blog! Your writing skills are great! They’re straight forward. Not long-winded at all. I like that
Your blog is such a pleasure to read. I’m also a food blogger, in fact. But not all that professional. I’m sort of an amatuer, so your blog, in fact, has been quite an inspiration to me!
Your posts about the various venues you’ve been to have become my source of reference and information.
All in all, keep up with the great work! Am looking forward to your next post
Sincerely,
Amanda

I really enjoy your photography and your trip especially the Europe trip.
While I was doing research and planning for my trip, I found your blog. Really interesting. I got many information from your Europe trip.
I would like to get more info from you if you don’t mind. I will be travelling from London – Paris – Milan – Venice – Pisa – Florence – and back from Rome. I wish to know more about the transport and the travel time from these places. I mix up between Eurail & Eurostar (what the different)
I hope you can advise as I’m cracking my head just to do the whole trip planning from accomodation, transport and places to visit.
Thank you….
Hi, just to make it simple (I am not an expert either)
Eurostar is an underwater train that travels from London -> Brussels -> Paris. If you want to get to Paris fast this would be the best way, but it is expensive as well. Tip is to book your Eurostar tickets as early as possible to get them at a cheaper rate. Other methods of travelling to Paris from London is by cruise, that’s is if you have the luxury of time to do so.
Eurail is the train service that connects the various cities in Europe, it is completely different from Eurostar. There are different classes of tickets you can buy.. either global pass or selected pass etc.. and of different duration.. weekly and monthly. If you are just travelling within Italy (from what I see in your itinerary) you should go for the selected pass which covers the cities you want to visit.
For accommodation I usually use hostelbookers.com to book my rooms.. it is very useful.
