Yakotaya Japanese Dining @ Metro Prima, Kepong

For an area that is surrounded by BBQ steamboat restaurants and sleazy massage parlours, you’d be surprised to find a nice Japanese restaurant such as Yokotaya in Metro Prima Kepong. Looking at their menu, there are two things for sure: the selection is very wide but price is on the higher side.

Unfortunately for us they were out of Unagi during our visit so we had to stick to other things especially salmon. And boy did we order a lot of that. First, it was a portion (~10 slices) of Norwegian Salmon Belly Sashimi @ RM28.80. It was fresh with a silky smooth texture, absolutely loved it despite its expensive price tag.

A unique looking platter that caught my eye is Salmon Zukushi (Salmon Favorites) @ RM34.80, which is basically made up of sushi, rolls and sashimi all entirely based on salmon only. For salmon lovers it is worth trying if your intention is to try a variety of stuff instead of ordering them separately.

Sun May Hiong Pork Satay @ Jalan Kota Laksamana, Melaka

Satay is a common food in Melaka so there is no surprise that this state has the most Pork Satay restaurants. Besides the meat being used, one major difference in Pork Satay (aka Nyonya Satay) is the peanut dip which is usually mixed with a dollop of pineapple sauce.

Sun May Hiong (and along with Xiang Ji, Ming Sate Hut etc) is one of the more popular restaurants in Melaka that specializes in Pork Satay. Once you sit down, you will be given a big tray of satays regardless of whether you ordered it or not. Then, you are free to take as many as you can stomach. When the tray is almost finished the satays will be replenished automatically until you say stop.
While I find the satays (60 cents each) to be quite good, the peanut sauce is oily and diluted. The pineapple sauce on the other hand does not do anything much to improve the overall taste. In fact, it is too sourish for my liking.

3D2N Stay @ The Villas, Sunway Resort

To celebrate the recent New Year, we checked into The Villas for a short stay. First time visitors will be surprised to find this private sanctuary within the lush tropical garden of Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, which is only minutes’ walking distance away from Sunway Pyramid via some ‘hidden’ paths. This would be the perfect place for couples who seek to celebrate special occassions with utmost privacy – no babies, no families so no noisy kids running around. And with only 17 villas around, there would only be a maximum of 34 guests at anytime.

pavilion-day

Just to be clear, I am not ‘invited’ to stay here and then write this post to promote them whatsoever. We actually own a SIVC (Sunway International Vacation Club) membership that we signed up with when we just started to work. Yeah we were young and stupid. Frankly speaking if not for the membership, I don’t think I would even consider staying here. But it is good to experience nice things once in a while, we gotta enjoy life sometime.
Anyway, this building behind the small pond is actually a restaurant-cum-reception of The Villas called the Pavillion. You can also think of it as your very own private restaurant, where you will be having most of your meals – breakfast, evening cocktails and romantic set-dinner (if you booked one).

stairs-to-the-villas

Since The Villas is pretty much off limits to everyone except the guests and staff, you have to be driven in by the butlers. The best spot to park your car would be at The Duplex‘s car park. There are plenty of parking space here and it is free of charge as well. If you are not familiar with Sunway and could not locate The Duplex (it’s pretty tricky to find this place) you can also park your vehicles at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. Then from the hotel lobby, you can take the hotel’s swimming pool, walk across it and follow this staircase which will lead you to The Villas.
If that is still very confusing, then the easiest way would be to tell Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa’s reception that you are checking into The Villas. They will know what to do and send someone to pick you up. Don’t worry about the parking ticket, you will given another one that looks like a room card that will let you get out for free later.

Fried Oyster (O Chien) @ CH Coffee Shop, Bukit Mertajam

I miss blogging about my hometown’s food. For those who don’t know where I am from, it’s Bukit Mertajam – a small town on the mainland of Penang. Now that I am home for the holidays, it is time for food hunting again. There is a saying in the Chinese community that good food can always be found near temples. Come to think of it, that saying is quite true especially in small towns, like mine.
The most famous temple in BM would be Pek Kong Cheng which is situated right in the center of the town, just next to the wet market. In the morning, there are plenty of food stalls in the catering for the local marker goers and workers with some being the most famous ones in town like the white wantan mee, koay chap, prawn noodle and many more. Come night, it turns into a popular supper spot with new food stalls that operate until midnight.

bm-fried-oysters

My latest discovery is a Fried Oyster stall that is manned by a young man in his 20s. I seldom return to BM nowadays so I didn’t even realize the stall which he has been operating for almost 5 years. His style of fried oyster is true to the northern Malaysian style, in which the eggs are fried into thin pieces then folded on top of each other followed by the oysters. The smallest portion costs RM7 and consists of two eggs and roughly 8-10 oysters. There are a few large sized oysters while the rest are medium to small but nothing too tiny, so not bad at all.
