Ais Kacang / Cendol
Ais Kacang @ Lorong Selamat
Apr 27th
A nice bowl of ais kacang during a hot day does wonders
I was spending the day hunting for my new camera and it was scorching hot. So, we stopped at Lorong Selamat to enjoy some ais kacang and to cool off. And do you know that the famous char koay teow here has moved to their own coffee shop? Their new shop is a corner shop at the end of the road. I think the char koay teow stall’s migration has affected the business a lot.. it used to be difficult to find a seat. Now, seats are freely available.
This is one of the nicer ais kacang in Penang which has still managed to maintain the quality and taste (unlike New World Park‘s) The price did went up a bit though.. Another ais kacang stall I’d recommend would be Penang Road’s.. will blog about that in future.
Anyway this is the first photo I took after I got my EOS 400D, it’s crappy lol. And having a 50mm lens, I’m always trying to play with depth of field and create some nice bokeh shots. Until today I still haven’t mastered the DSLR.. especially under tricky lighting conditions.
Ice Kacang @ Swatow Lane – Quality Dropped?
Feb 15th
If you have copy of Rasa Rasa Penang book “a visitor-friendly guide to its food” and went to try Swatow Lane‘s ice kacang based on its recommendation, you will be disappointed. I am not blaming the author for this, as I have also recommended this as one of the best ice kacang in [tag]Penang[/tag]. It’s just that the [tag]ice kacang[/tag] quality has dropped so much it has became normal tasting only.
Belacan beehoon and ABC in Sarawak
Oct 27th
Belacan beehoon is a hawker food only available in [tag]Sarawak[/tag] if I am not mistaken. I knew Sarawak had kolo mee, Sarawak laksa, kampua but certainly not belacan beehoon. When I first heard the name, I thought it would be something like belacan fried beehoon. Allen, my host during my Kuching trip told me that this is the most popular place for belacan beehoon. When Kuching folks think [tag]belacan beehoon[/tag], they think Ah Kheng in Jubilee Ground. Very true.. people were thronging this place even at 3PM well after lunch hour. Well as you can see, it’s very simple.. pour the belacan gravy over the beehoon and serve with a couple pieces of cuttlefish and chilli sauce. Honestly I didn’t like it.. the belacan smell is too strong and the taste is sweet.
Delicious Ice Kacang in Bukit Mertajam
Oct 16th
For good ais kacang in [tag]Bukit Mertajam[/tag] 大山脚, most will head to a famous stall in Taman Jaya (directly opposite BM Country Club) We, BM lang refer it as 榕树下 ice kacang because the food court is built under a big tree. It is built as simplest as possible – place some tables and chairs under a big canvas shelter and walla, a place to eat!
