Char Koay Teow
Char koay teow – my favorite Hawker food
Crab Meat Char Koay Teow
Nov 3rd
[tag]Bukit Mertajam[/tag] is a town that sleeps early. It is quite difficult to find food (un-mamak style) after 10pm except in the town area and Bukit Tengah. This post will bring us to a hawker centre joint by three restaurants opposite [tag]Ping Min primary school[/tag] in [tag]Bukit Tengah[/tag]. Food stalls are many but the only problem here is to find a decent parking.
Double Taste is the restaurant being featured.
A Crab Meat [tag]Char Koay Teow[/tag] stall operates beside the restaurant. Selling @ RM3.00 per plate, it has 3 large prawns and some crab floss dressed on top of the koay teow. The koay teow itself was quite good but I hardly felt eating any crab at all lol. Well, what to expect? For a crab already costs RM2 in the market.
How Kee Char Koay Teow
Oct 2nd
[tag]Taman Sri Rambai[/tag] is where my high school – Jit Sin High School (JSHS) is located. This neighbourhood is both fortunate and unlucky. Fortunate because the residents have easy access to a lot of food; and unlucky because its vulnerable to floods. Every morning the market’s sight is of people having their breakfast, housewives shopping for groceries and students going for tuition. Recently popular is the DVD business, selling the latest series from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. This really keeps the aunties and uncles busy lol. Anyway, Pusat Bimbingan Taman Sri Rambai was a popular tuition centre for Bahasa Malaysia. I had my tuition here too but I can’t remember how many classes I skipped to play games in cybercafes (yeah I was a stupid and lost student lol) Opposite the tuition centre is How Kee Seafood Restaurant. The last time I came here, this place was full of customers eating the [tag]Char Koay Teow[/tag].
Thinking that so many people flocking this restaurant even though it only sells Char Koay Teow, that should be enough to speak for its tastiness. So last week I finally had a taste of it. The Char Koay Teow @ RM2.20 contained a few medium sized prawns, a lot of cockles and a few slices of fish cakes. This is quite unusual, because I thought only KL people fry Char Koay Teow with fish cakes. It tasted good, but not great.. still worthy for a post ![]()
Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow
Jun 6th
I bet many of you have heard of the famous “Sisters’ Koay Teow” from Lorong Selamat. Well, they can move aside. Being simply overrated and overpriced, RM5.00 for a plate? It is plain outrageous. It tastes like normal CKT you would buy from anywhere else, just with bigger prawns -_- Worse still, you have to QUEUE for it, self service!
If you are from BM, chances are you have already sampled the best Char Koay Teow (CKT) in Penang, and IMO the best I’ve tasted so far. Bring any of your friends to try it, they will simply agree with you that it is the best.
A good plate of CKT must fulfill the following,
- Fried using lards, plenty of them. It’s unhealthy but it makes the dish so much nicer, so who cares?
- Use charcoal instead of gas.
- Fried with duck eggs. Because fried duck eggs have a nicer feel to the bite compared to normal fried chicken eggs. They are more fragrant too.
- Include lots of cockles, and big fat prawns. Throw in a few slices of Chinese Sausage too if possible.
- And finally, serve on a piece of (clean) banana leaf, to enhance the aroma.
Photos of the CKT shown above are taken in the famous Duck Egg CKT stall in BM. This is a family business run by 3 brothers daily from 9.30pm until midnight in 3 separate locations: taxi station, train station and along Jalan Kulim. This stall is a must for me and my friends during Chinese New Year, we would have a great time eating and talking about our school lives. It is kind of like a reunion spot for us.
If possible, go to the stall along Jalan Kulim as it is the best. One of the younger brother (operating in train station) is relatively new to frying so it might not taste as good as the other two. Before this he only helped out by serving the customers and making drinks. He can be recognized very easily by his long hair.
A normal plate of CKT costs RM2.20, big ones cost RM2.70. You can opt for an extra “hor-bao” duck egg as topping for RM0.70. I didn’t know they raised the all the price by 20cents until I went last weekend. For me, RM2.20 a plate is still cheap and worth it because the boss is not stingy with the ingredients: 4-5 medium sized prawns and generous amount of cockles
Bukit Mertajam Lau Yu Coffee Shop
May 1st
Hello my beloved hometown, that’s of course Bukit Mertajam
It must’ve missed me too for being away so long(8 months) lol.
“Lau Yu” coffee shop is one of the oldest coffee shops in BM(15-20 years wor, old kua?) “Lau Yu”, which means “Old Friends” if translated into Chinese, originally has 2 other branches. The one I frequent most is located in Taman Mutiara, along Jalan Padang Lalang.

This plate of Char Koay Teow only cost RM2.30.. what a steal

Very special Wantan Mee, taste it to feel it
In my opinion it has the 2nd best Char Koay Teow stall in the whole BM, no kidding. Other hawker stalls worth trying are Wantan Mee, Chicken Rice, Clay pot Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak and Tomyam Mee. The noodle stall that opens only in the morning outside is a big hit with students(Jit Sin High School is nearby) and working people and I notice the gold necklace the tauke is wearing is getting thicker and thicker ![]()
This is the coffee shop I grew up with, along with many other BM people ![]()
