Serai Satay Bar, Satay on the go @ Pavilion
May 27th
Located next to Food Republic, Serai Satay Bar is one of the latest eateries to open in Pavilion. They are introducing a new way of enjoying satay, which they call it Satay-on-the-go or Satay-To-Go.
Contrary to the conventional way of enjoying satay at the road side or taking away back to the home, Serai Satay Bar lets the customers enjoy satay in a specially made container, which can be easily carried along while you shop.
Because of the bar concept, customers can choose to either sit around the satay kiosk or at the table. Sitting around the kiosk would grant you a full view of the food preparation, while magazines are provided at the table for your reading pleasure.
So I was there last Sunday to meet Qistina, the owner of Serai Satay Bar to give the revolutionary concept a try.
After a brief introduction on the menu and their specialties, we got down to business straight away as we were hungry. While waiting for the food to arrive we had the Serai Blended @ RM5.50 (a drink that came highly recommended by Qistina) and Milky Bandung @ RM5.
According to Qistina, the Serai Blended originated from their family restaurant Serai Thai at Shah Alam. It is a highly popular drink over there so they figured that it would be good to make it available at Serai Satay Bar too. Click here to continue reading >
My most expensive cendol ever RM271.20 @ Bukit Tengah, Penang
May 15th
Yup you seen it right, it’s RM271.20 for a bowl of cendol. It was my most expensive cendol ever and I have only myself to blame. After placing my order and while walking towards my seat in the food court behind the cendol stall, my camera bag slipped off my shoulder and dropped on the cement floor.
Although I carried my bag really low about two feet from the ground, the impact was strong enough to damage my 50mm lens so badly it was rendered useless – partly thanks to the plastic build. Oh well, lesson learnt, gotta put more padding in my cheapo camera bag and carry it with more care.
I have heard many good stuff about this cendol stall operated by an Indian family just opposite Peng Bin primary school at Bukit Tengah. Some even commented that it’s so good it’s better than the famous one at Penang Road, which in my opinion is already very awesome. So, I just gotta give it a try and verify the claims myself.
Well, the good thing about the cendol was the bigger portion and a lot of the green starch ‘noodles’ was given. Other than that it was pretty normal tasting and personally, I feel it wasn’t even comparable to Penang Road’s.
And if you noticed, the green ‘noodles’ was fatter and shorter with a pretty bad texture too – being stiff and taste mushy when the teeth sunk in. The desired jelly feeling just wasn’t there.
If you were a Peng Bin student then you would know about this cendol stall. For RM1.20 a bowl I know shouldn’t be expecting too much but I had high hopes due to the many recommendations. Takeaways cost extra RM0.30 for each packet. Map via Wikimapia
In case you are wondering, I went and buy a 50mm replacement the next day in Penang, which cost me RM270. Luckily the old one had served me at least a year before retiring permanently so I was not that heartache lol.
Best Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah in Seri Kembangan
Apr 20th
One of the nicest food not to be missed in Seri Kembangan has to be this Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah stall. I still remember how I discovered this fabulous nasi lemak.
One evening I was planning to have my dinner at the food court across the road where this nasi lemak stall was operating. As soon as I got out of my car, I smelt something very fragrant – so fragrant that I could not help but to trace it.
And you guessed it right, the amazing smell came all the way from the stall right across the road! Needless to say I abandoned my original plan and bought a pack to try lol. Since then I have been a regular customer (at least twice a week!)
Due to its rather hidden location, not many people know about this nasi lemak stall. Not even those staying nearby. So, let’s hope this post will help to give the exposure it really deserves. Simply because I have tried many other nasi lemak ayam berempah, nasi ayam dara in the area and none of their taste can come close to this one. That’s a small mountain of fried chicken (ayam berempah), freshly deep fried everyday.
Although it is called “Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah”, the rice is actually just normal white rice instead of coconut milk rice. Don’t ask me why, ask the owner lol. Fairus seen here is responsible for preparing your nasi lemak.
