Bukit Mertajam OldTown Kopitiam
Dec 5th
This is probably old news but Oldtown Kopitiam finally opened a branch in Bukit Mertajam 大山脚. The kopitiam is big and may be the 2nd largest branch in Penang. I think OldTown Kopitiam at New World Park remains as the largest.
Big leh? There’s a multi-storey car park above it. The location is a new business park with many new houses coming up in the surrounding area. I’ve been to this kopitiam a couple of times and find it a really nice and relaxing place to hangout and yamchar.
Sri Ananda Bahwan Restaurant – Northern and Southern India Cuisine

[tag]Little India[/tag] in [tag]Penang[/tag] is the place to look for good [tag]Indian food[/tag]. Once you step into Little India you will first be greeted by the smell of burning incense sticks, the sights of colorful clothes and the hearing of loud Indian music.
Laksa Shack
Jul 3rd
[tag]Laksa Shack[/tag] ‘The [tag]Laksa[/tag] Specialist’ is one of the newer F&B business to establish its outlet in [tag]Penang[/tag]. Within 6 months, there are already 2 branches in the northern Malaysia region. One of it in [tag]Queensbay[/tag] while another in [tag]Sunway Carnival Mall[/tag].
Although laksa should be their specialty, we decided to give the rice set meal a try because they seemed more tempting, at least on the photo lol. Anyway, Laksa Shack labels the them as Rice & Set Berdulang. Shown here is the Set Brayni, which is available for 2 pax only.
Ais Batu Campur served in a large cup for RM5.90. It has lots of ingredients from grass jelly, red bean, corn.. Yeah you know the usual stuff they put in ice kacang. It looked better than it tasted
The [tag]Nasi Bryani[/tag] is good, topped with fair amount of raisins.
I would usually call these keropok and kuih but they are actually known as papadam and begedel. Papadam is the crunchy crackers that you get whenever you have nasi kandar or nasi tomato. And begedel is mashed potatoes deep fried with egg white and onions. I know these thanks to Mr.Google lol. Honestly, I didn’t really like the begedel’s taste.
This is Dalca Telur Bersayur.. Not sure what dalca means but its quite common in Malay and Indian food.
And lastly ayam masak merah, which is the nicest among all. And of course it should be lol. Actually there’s another dish called jelatah which is pickled vegetables and onions. You can spot it in the first photo. The rice set costs RM19.90, quite expensive in my opinion considering the small portions of the dishes. We will definitely return to try their real specialty – laksa next time ![]()
Satay Kajang
Feb 23rd
No, I didn’t go to [tag]Kajang[/tag]
The [tag]Satay Kajang[/tag] I had was in [tag]Bayan Lepas[/tag]. What differentiates [tag]Satay[/tag] Kajang from normal satay is the amount of meat, and the peanut sauce. Please pardon the photos’ quality, all taken using my camera phone.
Many would think that they are a bunch of copycats who borrowed the name of the infamous Sate Kajang [tag]Haji Samuri[/tag]. But they really got their satay and peanut sauce from Haji Samuri. For those of you who don’t know, Haji Samuri is claimed as the best when it comes to Satay Kajang. I have tried it once before when I was working in Cyberjaya and I have to agree that it’s very good.
Satay Kajang’s peanut sauce is grey-whitish and the chilli sauce is added as much as you like. It is sweet and has lots of peanuts. So nice, I can eat it on its own..
Here, they only serve 3 types of Satay: ayam, daging and perut. Satay perut is the most left in the photo.. I think it should be beef. The texture is like chicken skin, soft and tender but not fulling. Back in Kajang, there are more choices like fish, deer and rabbit. They also give lots of ketupat.
So my conclusion is, if you are dying for some Satay Kajang and couldn’t travel there anytime soon.. you can get your fix here lol. It won’t taste as good as the real Haji Samuri but for me, it was at least 90% as nice. The stall is easy to find, it is a corner house just opposite PSDC along the houses. Each stick costs RM0.80, which is double the price back in Kajang lol.
