‘Klasik’ Satay Station @ Restoran O’din, Taman Ehsan Kepong
Jul 12th
ANNOUNCEMENT: ‘Klasik’ Satay Station has moved to a new location at Taman Kepong Indah and is no longer operating the stall at Restoran O’din. Details here: http://www.vkeong.com/2012/02/klasik-satay-station-has-moved-to-taman-kepong-indah/
Last week, a reader suggested me to try a satay stall in Taman Ehsan Kepong called ‘Klasik’ Satay Station. For him it is the best among the famous ones in Klang Valley. After doing my own homework I found that ‘Klasik’ is still new to the satay scene and is relatively unknown in the cyberspace.
Just FYI, ‘Klasik’ did a satay blind test with their customers. The result was interesting, as it showed that 10/10 customers preferred theirs over the satay giant from Kajang aka Hj Samuri. Regardless of whether that bold claim is true or not, it was the biggest reason I dropped by to check them out last weekend.
Since ‘Klasik’ is still a new player – one year old to be exact, they are just renting a stall space in Restoran O’din. From what I was told, the boss’ sifu operates another stall in Kajang and is the original inventor of Sate Kajang. But just to be clear I am only repeating what he said so don’t take my words for it.
Besides using the best ingredients, one of the secrets in ‘Klasik’ satay lies in the oily baste. You know, the tin of oil satay sellers would dip their self made lemongrass brush into? If you look carefully it does look very different from the rest, which are usually just cooking oil.
Jackson’s Burger – Homemade Burger On Wheels @ Section 14, PJ
Jul 6th
For the past few weeks I have been trying to try all the nice food in PJ especially those near my office – more specifically areas like Section 14, Section 17, Taman Paramount, SS2 and Kelana Jaya. Reason being I will be relocating to Puchong soon. I figured that if I don’t explore these places now I will have little chance of doing so in the near future.
At Section 14 there is a mobile burger stall operated by a Chinese husband and wife team who only opens from lunch hour onwards. I would say they are quite popular with the people who live and work in the vicinty. Most customers prefer to take away the burgers but you could also eat it at the spot if you want because chairs are provided. We had our burgers on the spot and it proved to be a refreshing experience.. especially with the windy weather.
Chinese ‘Kah Liu’ Nasi Lemak @ Restaurant Chuan Lee, PJ
Jun 30th
For those who are already working I am sure you have a list of affordable places for lunch – me too. We even took the extra effort to maintain an Excel list that will help us randomize a makan place if we were undecided. If you ask me, I consider any meals under RM10 still affordable, cheap if it is under RM5. Well, if you’re working in Petaling Jaya then you might want to try this nasi lemak I am going to talk about. Hopefully it is good enough for you as a new entry in that list of yours.
But of course I did not stumble on this nasi lemak by accident because a colleague actually recommended it to me. When I asked if ‘kah liu’ (adding toppings) was available and he replied “Of course, there are mutton curry, chicken, sotong etc” – I was sold as soon as mutton was mentioned.
Char Koay Teow @ Kedai Kopi Sin Hwa, Pulau Tikus
Jun 19th
I could still remember my first time having the Char Koay Teow at Kedai Kopi Sin Hwa opposite the Pulau Tikus police station. It was particularly memorable due to the non-existant parking space (near to market) and the coffee shop was unusually stuffy with little ventilation. And of course, the Char Koay Teow is kind of special too, as it comes with squids and you have the option of ‘upgrading’ it to a duck egg version for extra 50 cents.
Instead of relying on the seafood sweetness achieved by using huge prawns, Sin Hwa’s Char Koay Teow is red hot, which focuses more on wok hei and spiciness – the oomph factor. And not to mention cheaper too compared to those selling at a crazy price of RM7-RM10 per plate.
