Hawker Food
“How Wei Yun” Pan Mee
Aug 6th
There is a popular coffee shop for lunch among working people in [tag]Bayan Lepas Industrial Zone[/tag], food served include Pan Mee, Chee Cheong Fun, Rojak and Siu Mai.
“[tag]Hou Wei Yun[/tag]” is located in [tag]Bukit Jambul[/tag] opposite Vistana Hotel, under the low cost flats. This shop is The surrounding is cool and windy because there are many big trees that provide free shades.
I got to know of “Hou Wei Yun” first from my brother, he has worked in Bayan Lepas for almost 2 years. Besides him, my colleagues also recommended me to try out their [tag]Pan Mee[/tag]. It is widely acclaimed that this shop serves one of the best Pan Mee in Penang, google it here. Since Siang Leng never been to this place before, so I brought her there for lunch last Friday.
Because of the big crowd, it is self service here. You need to take a piece of ordering paper from the counter and fill up your order details. There are 2 types of mee you can choose from, thin or thick (they make their own mee) and 2 styles of cooking, dry or soup. It took almost 40 minutes for our orders to arrive, luckily we had a couple of Siu Mais while waiting.
The Siu Mais look nice eh? But actually they are a let down, they tasted bland, just normal minced meat steamed. Cannot compare with dim sum restaurant’s at all. So you can save you money on this lol, it costs RM1.40 per plate of 3.
Dry Pan Mee is like konlo wantan mee, and taste quite similar too. The ingredients are pretty standard, minced pork, ikan bilis and fungus 黑木耳 (this thing is expensive, sold at RM20+ per kg in hypermarkets) Each plate comes with a small bowl of soup with 2 fish balls.
Another view of the Dry Pan Mee, each plate costs RM2.70. Siang Leng said KL ones taste the same, if not better lol.
The Pan Mee Soup is not as nice as the dry version. If eaten too slowly, the mee will start to expand (“phong”) So if you are ordering for soup, go with the thin mee ok? Trust me on this lol. And also be prapared to cover your food and drinks because the windy situation will cause plenty of leaves to fall. My rating: 6.5/10, I think there are better Pan Mee stalls, but in terms of popularity.. this shop owns all.
Food @ Swatow Lane
Jul 6th
I was brought to Swatow Lane last year by my parents and it gave me a very deep impression immediately. This place is like any coffee shop you will find in Penang, with an exception: they serve really nice ais kacang.

Thirst quenching Ais Kacang, best served in a hot afternoon, a normal bowl costs RM2.00. If you compare this with the one sold in Lorong Selamat (can be found in my earlier post here) you will definitely notice the difference in the quantity of ingredients being served as I said before ![]()
To find this place, IMO the easiest way is to locate McAllister Road, then look for either Abu Siti Lane or Lorong Selamat, across these two lanes is Lorong Swatow already.
Curry mee, tastes good. The stall owner changed already since I last went.

Loh Bak.. nothing special, BM ones taste better lol. Ordered for a friend because she never tasted them before ![]()
Fried Oysters is great, quite cheap too at a reasonable RM4.00 per plate. The frying style of this particular stall is quite different, he fries the oysters and eggs separately then only he places the oysters on top of the egg (as seen on pic) I think this is the only stall selling at such low price (for lesser quantity too of course) Other stalls in Penang seem to be selling starting from at least RM6.00 for the smallest plate.
Food @ Gurney Drive
Jun 7th
The hawkers at [tag]Gurney Drive[/tag] has been relocated to a vacant land along Jalan [tag]Tanjung Tokong[/tag] at the moment. This move is to make way for the authorities to upgrade the existing Gurney Drive [tag]hawker[/tag] centre. Among improvements being made are the lightings, flooring, landscaping and a much needed public toilet.
I still can remember when I went to Gurney Drive end of last year only to find the hawkers disappeared lol, not knowing they have relocated. I even made a phone call to Wen Fong to check with him whether the hawker centre existed before, silly me.
Actually there’s nothing special about Gurney Drive’s hawker center. It doesn’t really offer a large variety of [tag]food[/tag], but does provide a neat environment for dining. Gurney Drive is also a family and couples’ haven. Bring your loved ones here for a stroll after dining along the endless rows of restaurants, it makes good memory. Anyway look at the beautiful sky that evening, Siang Leng couldn’t resist taking a photo of it
The fried oyster we had was really good, look at the photos we took. Plenty of huge oysters hidden under the egg! It is a hit with the customers, quite a number of people lining up to take orders.
And these are some other food we had: Muar Chee, Satay and Tau Fu Fa. Avoid buying Satay from Chinese, go for the Malays instead for better ones. And also, remember to purchase the Tau Fu Fa cold lol. The one we had was warm, it’d be much nicer if chilled
Our one-day [tag]Penang[/tag] trip ended here after dinner. As usual, we boarded a ferry home. It was a great day with plenty of nice food stomached, a good movie watched and an enjoyable trip back to BM.
Looking forward to visit here again but minus the traffic
Food @ Lorong Selamat
Jun 6th
As the name implies, Lorong Selamat is a street in Penang Island that has a lot of good food to offer (although I am not very sure whether it is really that selamat or not
) I am neither familiar with Penang roads nor good at giving directions. To reach this place, just follow the road to Komtar and you will come across Macallister Road. Lorong Selamat is only 2-3 streets away from it.
The coffee shop is small but always packed with people. It has a traditional feel to it due to the tables being used. This lady clad in pink and wearing a cap shown in the photo below is very friendly with the customers ![]()
One of the must try in Lorong Selamat is their Ais Kacang. It is different from any other ABC because of its Sarsi flavored syrup and atapchi. It is very rare to see atapchi in ABC already nowadays. Anyway if you have the time, do walk accross the street to Lorong Swatow, which also features kick-ass ABC. The main difference is the amount of ingredients being served, Lorong Selamat’s ABC tends to be more stingy in this
The curry mee sold here is also good, RM2.50 a bowl. This was our lunch last Sunday before Siang Leng and I went to watch X-men 3 in Gurney Plaza.
