Our previous visit to Keong Kee Herbal Soup was great and we enjoyed the home-style dishes. But after that we had this constant nagging feeling that we should go back for the other more exotic herbal soups we missed.
So this time I was adamant that we weren’t leaving without trying at least one of them. Besides, I also had a go at the Pan Mee which came highly recommended by some of you. To cut to the chase, the Pan Mee is nice and this is actually coming from me, someone who does not even like Pan Mee!
Personally, the main reason I do not fancy Pan Mee is because of its rubbery texture that makes me feel like I am chewing on pieces of flavorless flour. So luckily for me the Pan Mee noodle here does not taste like that.
Even though the noodles is machine-rolled, it is slightly thinner than usual hence having a better elasticity and taste that suits my palate better. And of course you can choose to have your Pan Mee in a more traditional manner which is the torn/pinched style. Just let the aunty know!
As soon as the noodle arrived I was pleased to see the generous amount of ingredients given, considering most hawkers are getting stingy nowadays. The main stuff are minced meat, chopped mushrooms and fried anchovies which you could see are fresh with a crunch just by their looks.
The clear soup tastes mostly MSG-free and authentic like it was really boiled with pork bones. But what really makes this Pan Mee delicious is the appetizing mushroom fragrance that you won’t get from any other stalls. And that really makes the noodle stand out from the rest. For only RM4.30, this is a steal in KL.
I actually wanted to blog about this Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee later but I am still so damn pissed off with the shop. I had the worst experience dining experience ever here – got our orders forgotten TWICE, waited for one hour and even got scolded by the boss for the slightest thing! No matter how tasty or famous their Chili Pan Mee is, I have vowed to boycott this shop forever. If you feel the Sisters Char Koay Teow and Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow have bad attitudes, man you haven’t seen anything yet.
In KL I believe if Chili Pan Mee is mentioned, Kin Kin is the first shop to come into mind. Besides being famous for their Pan Mee (which I think is overrated anyway) they are also notorious for showing bad attitudes to customers. I have heard some incidents from my close friends where they were scolded by the owners but I have kept an open mind so far. At least until the last weekend.
The Pan Mee we waited for more an hour. Those customers who came in much later than us were served earlier, seriously WTF. They didn’t seem to notice the four of us had been sitting there for so long too. And any reminder to them about our orders would be brushed off nonchalantly. It’s like “do you think I care?” was written on their foreheads.
OK to be fair I am not expecting 5 star hotel service from a noodle stall, heck I didn’t even expect them to be nice and all. But hey, at least show us some respect like a normal human being does!
Chili Flakes. What’s this? Flakes made of chili to be mixed into your pan mee loh. Taste? Spicy and damn salty. I can’t imagine how some people manage to put 5-6 spoonfuls of this into their pan mee..
Although I am still very angry over the incident, I am going to give an honest opinion about their pan mee.. which in my honest, non-biased, frank, genuine, sincere, truthful opinion.. NORMAL only.

Fancy Mee Corner at Desa Setapak, Wangsa Maju is a relatively new restaurant that specializes in Pan Mee, dumplings, snacks and homemade drinks. 爱面子 is the restaurant’s name in Chinese, which could be translated to ‘loving noodle and dumplings’. It opened about 6 months ago and promotes a unique home style feel on the second floor’s seating. Despite not being a huge pan mee fan, the cozy environment was attractive enough for me to pay them a visit.
There are roughly twenty snacks to choose from at Fancy Mee Corner. One of them is the Traditional Fried Dumpling @ RM4.20.
There’s nothing fancy about the nice dipping sauce, it’s simply Thai chili sauce with a dollop of mayonnaise at the center.
Fried Pan Mee @ RM2.50 comes in a rather huge serving and it’s a novel dish created by the chef. It tastes like muruku, minus the spiciness. Quite an awesome snack for a cheap price and I gotta applaud the chef’s creativity. Who would have thought deep frying pan mee could be so tasty?
Best of all, the crunchiness was retained nicely even being left on the table for hours. I could see the potential of fried [tag]pan mee[/tag] being developed into a commercial snack.. I bet it will be popular among the younger people.
I have been using Serdang Raya‘s road whenever I go to KL. It is an alternative route to avoid any tolls, albeit the occasional jam. Along the road, there is a particular stretch with many used car dealers and workshops. A place like this would usually be quiet and deserted after working hours.
But, someone decided to set up a Pan Mee stall at the five foot way and managed to turn the place alive by night.
