Bel Pasto Pizza Italian Restaurant @ Kepong
Jan 24th
Bel Pasto is an Italian restaurant in Kepong that is run by real Italian chefs. The restaurant in Kepong is actually Bel Pasto’s second branch, with the first established at Aman Puri not too far away. Initially, I thought Bel Pasto had something to do with pasta because of the word similarity but it actually means ‘nice meal’.
Being in an Italian restaurant, it’s only natural that we tried their pasta. After all, it is their staple food. Fettucini Salmone @ RM19.50 was faithfully prepared according to typical Italian recipe. The al dente pasta, generous chunks of salmon and Parmesan cheese made made it an enjoyable dish even though I am not a pasta fan. We felt the price was a little expensive though.
We also had a bowl of Mushroom Soup @ RM6.80 but personally, I didn’t like it because of the bitterness of the wild mushroom used.
The Hawaiian Pizza @ RM15.50 was great, baked thin crust just the way I like it with loads of cheese melted on top. There’s really nothing to complain about.
Thai Style Charcoal Steamed Fish @ Baby Seafood, Klang
Jan 12th
Not long ago me and my makan gang ventured into Klang not for Bak Kut Teh but Baby Seafood Restaurant instead, which is famous for their signature Thai style steamed fish on charcoal stove. And the surprising thing about Baby Seafood is, they serve a variety of Thai food actually – something you wouldn’t know until you look at their menu.
I didn’t take part in the food ordering as my friend was the host that night. At Baby Seafood the charcoal steamed fish is a must try since it is their signature dish and the cooking method is not common. I am not saying you die die must order it, the number of people eating must be taken into consideration as well since the portion is not small.
Well it may look like any normal steamed fish with an exception that it uses charcoal as heat source, of course it is not that simple. A separate bowl of soup comes with each order of the steamed fish, which you can drink it directly (not recommended) or mix it into the fish-shaped steaming plate (nice touch) periodically when the soup starts to dry up. As for the fish, a few options were available like garoupa and snapper but it all depends on the availability. We had a snapper @ RM39.
Azuma Japanese Restaurant @ Queensbay Mall, Penang
Jan 10th
On Christmas Eve me and my brother went to Azuma Japanese Restaurant at Queensbay Mall for dinner. I specifically chose Queensbay because it was one of the places I used to hang out a lot when I was still working in Penang, I wanted to see how much changes had taken place since then.
Well it seemed like quite a number of restaurants and cafes had established themselves in the mall, which is a good thing because I seriously felt that Queensbay lacked choices when it came to food. But I still don’t understand why they wouldn’t do anything about the open air car – the road condition is still bad!
While I am not entirely happy being having to work in Singapore because of the deterioration of quality of life, earning Singapore dollar means I get to spend more comfortably when I return to Malaysia. My brother is not much of a sashimi fan so I only ordered for myself – Kiku Sashimi @ RM35 that consisted of 8 pieces of assorted raw fish.
The sashimi was fresh and quite thick sliced, obviously something I am very happy about. I enjoyed the salmon sashimi the most and I think I am gonna order just that next time. Maguro is juicy but the texture is just not as great as salmon’s while I find Tako just too rubbery for my liking.
My brother had a piece of Unagi Kabayaki all to himself. RM22.
There was a promotion for pan fried salmon so we had one of it as well.
Ocean Seafood Village Restaurant @ Kota Kinabalu – Live Seafood Tanks!
Dec 24th
I just remembered these photos taken during my trip to Kota Kinabalu. It was a seafood dinner me and SL took together with KampungBoyCityGal at Ocean Village Seafood Restaurant (海王城海鮮村).
But before I continue, first let me just say that the food wasn’t spectacular and the price was very expensive, mainly because the restaurant is to cater to tourists mostly. I don’t think any Sabahan with the right mind would want to dine there and get chopped like us lol.
Then again, this post isn’t really about the food nor the prices. It’s about visiting perhaps one of the largest and most awesome seafood restaurant with the most live seafood on display in Malaysia. If you thought Bali Hai‘s display of seafood was impressive, wait till you see Ocean Seafood Village’s.
A large prawn statue greets the customers at the entrance of Ocean Seafood Village Restaurant.
Once we stepped into the restaurant, instead of making orders we made way to the live seafood area like kids who couldn’t wait to go to the playground. Our jaws literally dropped looking at the arrays of aquarium tanks housing the countless live seafood ranging from prawns to clams and fish.
The front rows mainly housed live prawns, mantis prawns at the middle, fishes at the back and clams on the side with crabs crawling around on the ground.
These red colored tiger prawns price increase ten bucks for every upsize: RM20 each for small, RM30 for medium and RM40 for large. Pricey? Oh yes, certainly. But do keep in mind that even the smallest prawns are at least twice the length of an average adult’s finger.
