Ying Ker Lou Chinese-Hakka Cuisine Tea Time Promotion @ Pavilion KL
Feb 24th
Ying Ker Lou – an expensive looking and award winning restaurant that claims to serve authentic and MSG free Chinese-Hakka cuisine. If it’s not for their tea time dim sum promotion, I don’t think I’d ever step in for a meal. But also thanks to the promotion, I wouldn’t have the desire to dine there anymore. But just to be clear, this post is only valid for reference if you intend to try their tea time promotion. Their “normal hour” food could paint a different story though.
I will start with the dim sum we liked most – Steamed Siew Mai with Prawns @ RM6. The compact texture is a rarity in Siew Mai, plus the prawns were fresh and intensely sweet so there was really nothing to fault with it.
Hakka Bamboo Shoot Dumplings @ RM5, the skin was way too chewy while the fillings tasted forgettable.
Penang Loh Bak @ Kheng Pin Cafe, Penang Road
Jan 25th
If you are in Penang looking for Loh Bak, one of the places I would recommend you to try is at Kheng Pin Cafe. The coffee shop is located at the junction of Jalan Sri Bahari and Penang road. The owner and cook, whom I affectionately address as Uncle Lau is a friendly and chirpy man. Although his Loh Bak is delicious, what I like the most are his deep fried squid and prawn fritters, which are prepared upon order only to ensure freshness.
I asked Uncle Lau to prepare a person’s mixed portion for me, it was only a few bucks.
Satay Zul @ Terminal Satay Zul, Kuantan
Jan 12th
A visit to Kuantan wouldn’t be complete without trying the locals’ favorite satay – Satay Zul. From what I observed, Satay Zul’s popularity is immense, as the restaurant was full in ten minutes just after it was open. And the queue of take-away customers were already starting to build up.
One unusual thing I noticed about Satay Zul is that they do not give free cucumber and onion, you acually have to order and pay for them separately. I am not sure if this is an east-coast-satay-restaurant policy or only Satay Zul is practicing it but I am sure most of us are used to having those greens included with our satays FOC. If anyone could enlighten me on this please do so.
EspresSOUP – Soup in Bread @ Kepong Village Mall
Dec 19th
If you frequent shopping malls then you should have noticed EspresSOUP, a kiosk-like restaurant that serves soup in an bowl made of bread. It looked interesting so I gave it a try at the Kepong Village Mall branch last weekend.
Although the soup variety is good they all seem too familiar already. The choices are none other than the usual mushroom, clam chowder, minestrone, pumpkin, tomato, corn and broccoli. Price is RM7.90 a portion if ordered together with the Farmers Bread.
