Western Food
Bloggers Cafe Fusion Food @ Maju Utama Business Centre, Bukit Mertajam
Jul 27th
Usually when a new cafe opens I am quite hesitant to blog about it, fearing that it would close down not long after. Can’t blame me for having that feeling, as many cafes do come and go in a short period.
My skepticism was even stronger because the cafe has a rather corny name – Bloggers Cafe. It makes you wonder if only bloggers are allowed to eat inside, lol. Then there’s their menu, which seem to offer nothing special from its competition like Old Town and Station 1. It’s the same ol’ nasi lemak, chicken chop, instant noodles with ham and egg, toasts and ice blended drinks. Pretty standard cafe food.
But sometimes being normal and not doing anything fancy is actually good enough, as long as the food is not awful coupled with a competitive pricing. Then throw in a clean, comfy environment, courteous staff, free WIFI along with live singing and you have a busy cafe with happy returning customers. In fact, my house is very near to Bloggers Cafe and I hang out here quite often.
Butter and Homemade Kaya Toast @ RM2.50. I had their peanut butter and kaya toast before and they weren’t stingy with the spread at all, each bite was overflowing with fillings. So I was a bit baffled why the same did not apply for the butter and kaya toast lol. It was nice but I still prefer Old Town’s for the crispness.
A Western Set here costs RM12.90, which includes a soup, main course, drink and a dessert. The main course by default is normal chicken chop with tomato sauce with iced lemon tea. But for RM1 extra you can opt to “upgrade” your main course to black pepper or mushroom chicken chop, or have honey lemon instead.
Botak Jones Authentic American Food @ Tampines
May 20th
Botak Jones, a food joint that specializes in authentic American food as well as boldly claiming that they serve damn good food at a damn good price. A branch is located at where I used to stay in Tampines and sometimes we would head there for dinner when we feel like having a heavy, hearty meal of American food.
If you are wondering, Botak Jones is indeed run by a botak guy in Singapore and his sense of humor can be felt when you browse his website or when you read the menu. Botak Jones’ menu is 18 pages long and packed with description of each item – a good read to know what to expect and also to expand your knowledge in American food especially steaks.
THE MASSIVE is a 5 inches hamburger with a 220 gram of pure beef patty done medium well, in which the patty is as big as the bun. At $9.80 for a set it comes with two sides. The price is already worth it for the portion alone, enough to feed a really hungry big eater. As for the taste I felt it was not that damn good, but still enjoyable.
Betty’s Midwest Kitchen – America On A Plate! @ Aman Suria Damansara
Apr 22nd
Not long ago I popped into Petaling Jaya for the weekend to meet up with my friend who stays at Aman Suria. Not far away from his house (walking distance in fact) is Betty’s Midwest Kitchen, a restaurant serving American styled food specializing in Midwest cuisine ranging from soups, sandwiches, to pork chops and burgers.
I didn’t know about Betty’s because it was only opened about 6 months ago and I was at Singapore all the while. But I am quite surprised with the popularity it managed to achieve in such a short period. I believe the bloggers who shared their dining experience at Betty’s is a contributing factor.
Jucy Lucy is a hamburger that uses a grilled pattie consisting of both beef and pork. Hidden within the thick patty is a melted cheese core that flows out if you cut it early. But it is recommended to leave the hamburger to rest and cool down for a while even after it has been served to to avoid burning your tongue.
Jucy Lucy is priced at RM13.50 and it comes with a substantial amount of fries. While the hamburger’s name suggests a juicy experience, it was rather quite the opposite. I felt the patty was a little too dry for my liking and it didn’t hold up together really well. A crumbling patty in a burger makes it difficult to enjoy or even eaten properly.
But luckily they provide fork and spoon so it didn’t turn out to be a big mess. That aside, the seasoning was well done and the overall flavor could be a pleasant surprise for people who are trying it for the first time. It has this refreshing taste, which I believe comes from one of the leafy ingredients present in the meat patty.
All Day Breakfast @ privé Bakery Cafe, Marina Keppel Bay
Apr 14th
privé is a fine dining restaurant at the Marina Keppel Bay, a waterfront precinct that houses a luxurious residential apartments and a private marina. And even the island itself is private. To access privé you will have to cross the Keppel Bay Bridge that connects the island to the mainland.
Although it was quite a long walk, the scenery was rewarding enough to make it worthwhile. Anyway the reason I went to privé was to try their all day breakfast, and the scenic view was definitely a plus.
The all day breakfast is served at privé’s bakery cafe from 9.30am to 5pm, with five selections to choose from ranging from $13.5 to $17. Additional toppings like ham, bacon, mushroom or salmon can be ordered at $3 a portion.
For my brunch I chose the privé Ultimate Breakfast @ $17, the serving was huge and had 2 eggs scrambled (or fried), sausage, Arugula (the slightly bitter greens), mushroom, roasted tomato, baked beans, toasts and fried bacon strips. Mmm.. bacons, I like.
As much as the platter of breakfast looked appetizing and all, only the scrambled eggs was outstanding. It was perfectly done, easily being one of the milkiest and creamiest scrambled eggs I ever had. A little seasoning was all it needed. However the sausages were quite tasteless and had a rather coarse texture, which I didn’t really liked.
