Best Yam Rice @ Jalan Murthy, Bukit Mertajam

After selling for so many years, the famous Bukit Mertajam Yam Rice stall below the old IBM finally shifted to a new location. They actually shifted one or two years ago, but I never had the chance to go back since my last visit.
I felt the move was really necessary, as the original coffee shop was just too small to accommodate the flurry of customer and latecomers had to sit at the five foot way. Plus, it was a pretty dark too (bad for photography lol).

Whenever an eatery shifts place, the main concerns for customers are usually on the food quality and pricing. Believe it or not, sometimes food does taste different when taken in another environment.
Some owners might even have to increase the price of their food too in order to cope with the expenses on renovation and stuff. Well, fortunately I can still say the Yam Rice’s quality and pricing still remained the same.

Yam Rice @ Taman Sentosa, Bukit Mertajam

One of the must try food in my hometown – Bukit Mertajam is Yam Rice. There are a few good ones around and one of them is located in Taman Sentosa. If you are coming from BM town, Taman Sentosa is a small residential area which lies along Jalan Kulim on the way to Cherok Tok Kon and Kulim. This area also houses many good food and seafood restaurants.

Bukit Mertajam Best Yam Rice

The best [tag]yam rice[/tag] in [tag]Bukit Mertajam[/tag] 大山脚 can be found in the town area, below IBM tution centre. I used to have my tuition class here during my high school days for some of the teachers are really good. FYI my father teaches Form 6 Physics here too :P

A set for 2 costs RM9.60, that’s with additional pork meat balls.

It is very easy to know if the yam rice is ‘ho liao’ (good) or not. Notice the white chunks? Those are yam, the more the better.

Extra meat balls for me because they are very sweet and tender. The soup tastes sourish because they boil it with salted vegetables. That’s the taste to keep you appetized!

On a side note, it was the first time I tasted umbra semboi.. Not really my kind of juice lol.

If there is a food that you can find available more in the mainland side of Penang, it gotta be Yam Rice. It is less common to find stalls that solely sell Yam Rice in Penang island compared to Seberang Perai district. Do you know that some stalls use [tag]Bukit Mertajam[/tag] [tag]Yam Rice[/tag] as their names? As far as I know, there are 4 places to look for good Yam Rice here: Taman Sentosa, the stall below IBM Tuition Centre, Taman Mutiara and Chai Leng Park (there are 2 stalls here) A set consists of Yam Rice and Salted Vegetable Pork Soup. Usually, they also offer Vinegar Pork Leg as additional side dish.

Yam Rice is rice cooked with yam (how straightforward lol) by boiling them together. So the rice is really fragrant and the yam soft. If lucky, one could get a bowl of rice with many chunks of yam. Well, today I wasn’t that lucky :P

The appetizing soup has generous amount of pork meat and balls. Taken together with the chilli sauce, nice lah! And for hygiene purposes, I opted not to take the pork organs.. still don’t really dare to eat any organs unless they are prepared by my mom. Anyway, a 2 persons meal like this costs only RM8.20, cheap right? ;)
