Heng Kee Hock Kien Klang Bak Kut Teh @ Bandar Menjalara, Kepong
Nov 22nd
I have been trying Bak Kut Teh quite extensively lately and have discovered some new found favorites, one of them being Heng Kee Hock Kien Klang Bak Kut Teh. I know there is another famous one at PJ Old Town with the same name but they are not the same yeah.
Anyway, Heng Kee (Hock Kien) seems to be doing very well now, as they have like nine branches across Klang Valley with the latest one at Jaya One being more upscale and modern than your average Bak Kut Teh restaurant (air conditioned and equipped with Wi-Fi and LCD TV) .
In total I have made three visits to two different branches of Heng Kee and found the quality to be good and consistent, worth recommending I would say. They also serve some other standard dishes for Bak Kut Teh restaurants like braised pork and rice wine chicken.
Price wise they are reasonable at RM9 for a person’s portion. But don’t expect the same pricing for the Jaya One Branch though, they are about 30-40% more expensive not including the taxes yet.
Brilliant Nasi Lemak House – Nice and Cheap Nasi Lemak @ Kepong
Oct 11th
I am pleased to announce there is a new place for nice and cheap nasi lemak. Cheap if you come during weekdays after 3:15pm; affordable if you come any other time. I use the word cheap because for a plate of nasi lemak with meat or seafood and a huge glass of drink, it’s only RM5.80 and best of all, the price is nett! No annoying service charge or government tax are added.
The place is called Brilliant Nasi Lemak House located at the shop lots next to Carrefour Kepong. The shop is quite new with a cafe like environment, clean and simple suited for a quick satisfying meal. Actually I only got to know this place after SL had her lunch here once. Her feedback about their nasi lemak was positive hence our second visit.
I actually aimed for their Nasi Lemak with Nyonya Curry Chicken but I guess my luck ran out, they had everything else but this since it was near their closing time. So I had their Brilliant Nasi Lemak set instead at a much higher price @ RM16.80 that comes with a Brilliant Dessert (something like Leng Chee Kang)
Happy City Steamboat Restaurant (Live Seafood) @ Kepong
Oct 1st
When it comes to steamboat I bet most of you think of going for the buffet type first. Although it’s cheaper and you get to eat all you can, the ingredients are often those of cheap and of substandard freshness. Most of the time I leave the restaurant unsatisfied.
Alternatively, by spending 20-30% more you could have a nice steamboat meal at Happy City Steamboat Restaurant just a street away from Carrefour Kepong. As far as steamboat goes this is surprisingly good and the seafood set actually comes with LIVE seafood!
By the way do you notice Kepong and Menjalara area are filled with steamboat restaurants at every corner? There must be an explanation to this..
A few seafood sets are available, broken down according to the number of pax. For a 2-3 pax set, it cost RM79.90 and it comes with tiger prawns, various seafood like scallop, mussels and etc (one of each only), and a choice of flower crabs or a whole fish (choice of Red Snapper or White Pomfret).
Dim Sum @ Sin Choi Wah Restaurant, Bandar Menjalara Kepong
Sep 6th
Sin Choi Wah restaurant is the latest dim sum restaurant to open in Kepong at Bandar Menjalara. It is actually a branch of Choi Wah at Jinjang but much larger considering that it occupies a whole 3-storey building all to itself. But do note that Sin Choi Wah is more of a restaurant serving Chinese dishes. Equipped with huge halls and ballrooms, they mainly cater to weddings and private functions and dim sum was only available later.
WIthin the first few weeks of opening, a close friend of mine had visited the restaurant a few times and gave good ratings. So I thought their dim sum should be as good as well.
Although there are about 40+ items to order, they look all too familiar, which are pretty much the same dim sum you would see in a typical dim sum restaurant. Depending on the ingredients, each basket has a price between RM4.80 to RM7. Starting with the highly recommended items: Har Gao @ RM5 was delicious owing to the extremely fresh, sweet and crunchy prawns.
I like the Siew Mai (steamed prawn dumpling, RM5) because each dumpling contains three large prawns with little minced meat. You could really taste the sweet flavor of the prawns without any strong porky taste.
