George Town
Chulia Street Curry Mee @ Chulia Street
Oct 11th
A buddy of mine recently recommended me to try a famous curry mee in Chulia Street (Lebuh Chulia) Being born and raised in the mainland side of Penang – Bukit Mertajam town, I always have difficulties navigating in Georgetown. The many number of streets and lanes, each with their very own unique names are confusing for me. It took a while for me to find this curry mee stall, I even had to ask a couple of people for directions. Any BM-kia here faces the same problem like me?
New Lane Hawker Food
Jul 15th
New Lane (Lorong Baru) is a street off McAllister Road in Penang that transforms into a food heaven when night falls. By 5-6pm, both sides of the street will be lined up with hawker stalls, leaving the patrons spoilt with choices.
Although the stalls are many, some of them are redundant. Char koay teow, satay, popiah, bbq chicken wings, fried oysters.. there’s more than 1 stall selling them. And there is some rules while ordering too. Take satay and popiah for example, you must order at least 10 sticks, and 2 pieces of popiah. Anything less than the minimum quantity, they don’t prepare it. In my opinion this rule kinda sucks, simply because sometimes we just want to try before ordering more. Hmm.. didn’t know such rule could exist in Penang..
New World Park
Feb 25th
I have seen a lot posts in forums and posts by bloggers about [tag]New World Park[/tag]. Despite looking at the photos I never managed to get a clear impression of the place.
In case you didn’t know, New World Park is the latest [tag]food court[/tag] in [tag]Swatow Lane[/tag]. I am not sure if it’s owned by the boss of the old [tag]hawker centre[/tag] ‘Sin Se Kai’. In Hokkien, ‘Sin Se Kai‘ means new world. Anyway, in New World Park you can find 2 stalls selling the same dish in different corners.
One thing I absolutely love about this place is the vastly available car parks. Previously if you were to eat at Swatow Lane, you need to park at the road side and walk for a distance under the ever hot sun. The car park here charges RM0.50 for the first hour, more than enough time for a nice meal. There are also parking attendants to direct traffic, so parking here is really good.
You gotta try the ais kacang here, one of the best in [tag]Penang[/tag]. Do remember to request for an extra scoop of ice cream if you want it to be more special. A normal bowl costs only RM2.50, great for quenching thirst.
Fried oysters start at RM5.00. Maybe because I never had fried oyster for too long, it was really really good!
Curry Mee is good, RM3.00 per bowl.
Mee Sultan is a disaster. Compared to Haji Mohd’s Mee Tokun, this plate of mee goreng costing RM4.00 is absolute rubbish. If this can be called Mee Sultan, Mee Tokun can changed its name to Mee Agong already. One taste and I already knew it was fried in a cincai way. Noodles too spicy and the cuttle fish lacking in taste. So my advice is to avoid this stall at all cost.
Hope you could get a better impression based on my photos lol. Eating here is a much better experience because of the cleaner, cooler environment. I think the hawkers in ‘Sin Se Kai’ are not pleased. They were usually busy and business was brisk, but now all customers are heading to New World Park.
Food @ Swatow Lane
Jul 6th
I was brought to Swatow Lane last year by my parents and it gave me a very deep impression immediately. This place is like any coffee shop you will find in Penang, with an exception: they serve really nice ais kacang.

Thirst quenching Ais Kacang, best served in a hot afternoon, a normal bowl costs RM2.00. If you compare this with the one sold in Lorong Selamat (can be found in my earlier post here) you will definitely notice the difference in the quantity of ingredients being served as I said before ![]()
To find this place, IMO the easiest way is to locate McAllister Road, then look for either Abu Siti Lane or Lorong Selamat, across these two lanes is Lorong Swatow already.
Curry mee, tastes good. The stall owner changed already since I last went.

Loh Bak.. nothing special, BM ones taste better lol. Ordered for a friend because she never tasted them before ![]()
Fried Oysters is great, quite cheap too at a reasonable RM4.00 per plate. The frying style of this particular stall is quite different, he fries the oysters and eggs separately then only he places the oysters on top of the egg (as seen on pic) I think this is the only stall selling at such low price (for lesser quantity too of course) Other stalls in Penang seem to be selling starting from at least RM6.00 for the smallest plate.
