Everything about Penang

Char Koay Teow @ Kedai Kopi Sin Hwa, Pulau Tikus

I could still remember my first time having the Char Koay Teow at Kedai Kopi Sin Hwa opposite the Pulau Tikus police station. It was particularly memorable due to the non-existant parking space (near to market) and the coffee shop was unusually stuffy with little ventilation. And of course, the Char Koay Teow is kind of special too, as it comes with squids and you have the option of ‘upgrading’ it to a duck egg version for extra 50 cents.

Instead of relying on the seafood sweetness achieved by using huge prawns, Sin Hwa’s Char Koay Teow is red hot, which focuses more on wok hei and spiciness – the oomph factor. And not to mention cheaper too compared to those selling at a crazy price of RM7-RM10 per plate.

Nostalgic Sisters Curry Mee @ Air Itam Market

For a taste of the nostalgic and traditional Penang Curry Mee you may head to Air Itam‘s market for it. A pair of sisters have been selling curry mee for decades there and another interesting thing is that you won’t be eating at a proper stall with table and chairs. You could choose to eat via the old style, which is to sit on the stools provided right in front of the sisters, or at some coffee shops nearby.

Due to their old age they get extra help from the younger generation to do the dishes especially during public holidays. But the cooking and preparation of the noodles and all are still done by them, such is their dedication and passion.

I am not boasting when I say this is one of the most beautiful restaurant I have visited thus far. For first time visitors I am sure you would be impressed by the restaurant’s sense of tranquility and beauty. Recently more and more restaurants like this are opening up in Penang, which I feel is a good thing. But only if the food is equally good, that would have been great.

The alfresco seating area is brighter and more comfortable but it also means you are more exposed to mosquitoes. During rainy days, or even when it’s just dark and cloudy, customers would be advised to sit within the restaurant.

Honda Showroom Curry Mee @ Jalan Sungai Pinang, Penang

A popular spot for Curry Mee at Penang in the morning is along Jalan Sungai Pinang, where a few hawkers have gathered to form a road-side eating spot. It is also where Penangites fondly refer as ‘the Curry Mee in front of Honda showroom’. Just so you know, this eating place is also next to a monsoon drain, not for those who are picky about cleanliness.

Unlike the usual Curry Laksa that already embodies the chili paste into the soup, Penang’s style separates them. Using a light coconut milk based soup, the taste and richness are increased with the addition of specially prepared chili paste. So the toppings aside, you could say chili paste is the main criterion that makes a good Penang Curry Mee. Even though it is a secret recipe among the hawkers, all of them would tell you the same thing when it comes to the chili paste’s prepartion: patience in slowly cooking it to maximize the fragrance.
