Kopi Time Kopitiam @ Atria Shopping Centre, Damansara Jaya
Dec 3rd
Just when you thought there couldn’t be more Kopitiams, new ones are coming up every now and then. It could only mean one thing, yum cha is Malaysians’ favorite past time, and Kopitiam business is still a growing business in Malaysia.
Some of my friends like to yum cha a lot, and they go Kopitiam hopping around frequently. And one of their recommendations is Kopi Time at Atria Shopping Center for the toasts. By the way the Kopitiam’s name is quite catchy.. Anytime someone asks “Hey what time is it?” You can simply say “It’s Kopi Time!” lol lame joke. Anyway, good yum cha place must be shared right?
The main reason the toasts are popular is because Kopi Time doesn’t stinge on the butter and the breads are charcoal toasted (located next to the counter), which gives it a nicer fragrance. It’s a no-brainer really. Just make sure your toasts are generously coated with butter and kaya, reasonably priced and the crowd will come on their own.
Usually I won’t want to blog about Kopitiams, because I feel they are way too commercialized and the food quality deteriorates with every new franchise opened. But I will make an exception for Kopi Time. Besides, I think this place is well known among the locals but not featured on food blogs prominently enough yet.
Steamed Sang Yu (Snakehead) @ Yap Yin Bak Kut Teh, Seri Kembangan
Nov 24th
When I was still working at KL, one of the restaurants I had always wanted to try was Yap Yin Bak Kut Teh at Seri Kembangan. Besides being near to where I stayed, Yap Yin’s famous Steamed Sang Yu (Snakehead) also stirred up my curiosity, well mainly because I never had any steamed Snakehead before. And I heard it was really good too!
But before I continue further, I just want to apologize to my makan buddies for bringing them here. You guys know who you are if you’re reading this. Anyway I am saying that because the food we had that night was pretty average with only one or two dishes really stood out. And personally I was quite disappointed with the Steamed Snakehead. It didn’t quite lived up to its reputation.
Steamed Sang Yu @ RM36. The only great thing about this dish was the fish’s freshness. It was still alive before being cooked, and you can see them still alive swimming around in the aquariums at the restaurant. The Snakehead’s flesh was nicely sliced into bite pieces that can be easily picked up using a chopstick, hence making it a lot easier and less messier to enjoy. But still, you need to lookout for the tiny bones that may still be present in each slice of meat. Click here to continue reading >
Avanti Italian-American Restaurante @ Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa
Nov 2nd
It all began with a sudden crave for steak. Ever since I had the slab of Maria’s heavenly Charbroil Australian Wagyu steak, there was no turning back – I am now a Wagyu Steak convert. To fulfill my desire for this expensive luxury food I went to Avanti, an Italian-American restaurant in Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. Instead of the many other well known and established steakhouse like Prime at Le Meridien, I chose Avanti simply because of its location.
I didn’t have the mood nor patience to get through the traffic jam leading to KL’s city center, especially on a Friday night. Besides, I didn’t read any complaints on the restaurant’s food after Googling around so I thought it should be alright. Sadly I went home a disappointed, a few hundred bucks poorer and did not had my cravings fulfilled, at all.
The night started well though, with unlimited supply of crusty bread to go with the tuna or dipping them in olive oil while we waited for our main courses to arrive. Our soup – Southern Italian Spicy Seafood Soup was perhaps the dish we enjoyed the most throughout the night.
Being robust and flavorful, a blend of different seafood like scallop, prawn and squid are prepared along with a generous amount of sliced shallot. Since this is fine dining it shouldn’t be surprising that a serving like this cost RM29. Did your jaw drop? lol.
Among the choices of Chateaubriand (beats me), Entrecote Double (omg what is this lol), Beef Tenderloin, Rib Eye and Strip-Loin, I chose Grilled Australian Chilled Wagyu Beef Tenderloin for being the most tender part of the beef. Click here to continue reading >
Senjyu Sushi Cineleisure @ Mutiara Damansara
Oct 31st
A quick recap of the food we had at Senjyu Sushi @ Cineleisure Damansara not too long ago. I have blogged about them twice previously, and both times I quite enjoyed the food. At first I found their menu to be expensive if compared to the other Kaiten Sushi restaurant, but the prices were subsequently reduced in my second visit. Not going to elaborate much, as they have been mentioned a few times before.
Salmon Sashimi – RM8.
Thick sliced, fresh and served exquisitely.
Followed by silver plate Kaiten Sushi @ RM6 each. Unagi Tamago.
Rose shaped salmon sashimi on black sesame Makimono. Click here to continue reading >
