Restoran Yap Chuan Bak Kut Teh @ Puchong Utama

I used to feel Yap Beng at Equine Park prepares better Bak Kut Teh even though they are actually a branch of Yap Chuan at Puchong. But a revisit to both after three years changed my mind, now it’s the other way round. Yap Chuan seems to be able to maintain the standards better while Yap Beng’s has dipped more and more over the years.

My taste buds have changed over the years too. I used to prefer Bak Kut Teh with dark stock that has strong herbal taste, probably because that is the only style available from where I come from (Penang) And Yap Beng’s is exactly like that, which explained my fondness towards them in the past.
But now I like those light colored ones with an even flavor of sweetness and herbs, liven up by suitable amount of Chinese wine. While Yap Chuan’s style is not exactly the one I described, it is still good enough in its own way. RM20 for a ‘dai guat’ (big bone) portion.

Lucky Hong Kong Dessert (發記甜品) @ Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara

In less than 10 days I will be going to Hong Kong for a 5-day trip. While planning for the itinerary, Lucky Dessert fell into the radar of the dessert shop we have shortlisted to try. Then I suddenly remembered that this Lucky Dessert actually has a branch in Malaysia at Sunway Giza Mall. During their grand opening last year I was invited to sample their desserts and give my comments. However, due to my ‘no invitational meals’ policy I gave that a miss. And since Lucky Dessert already has a branch here I guess there’s no point going all the way to Hong Kong for it right? For me, in case they are good then I might want to try the original thing in Hong Kong for comparison sake. Else I will just cross them off my list.

When you glance through the menu you will find the desserts here are not THAT expensive compared to My Honeymoon or Tim Pun Gor Gor. But when you see the desserts’ portion you will feel the price is actually just standard – maybe even more expensive than its peers. For example a portion of Mango Roll (芒果糯米卷) has two small slices priced at RM6 as opposed to My Honeymoon’s RM9 for almost double the portion. Worst still, the mango used for the dessert was not sweet and didn’t even have any mango flavor to begin with.

Heng Kee Bak Kut Teh @ PJ Old Town

Ever since I came to PJ to work, people have been asking if I have tried the famous Bak Kut Teh in PJ Old Town that only opens at for dinner and supper. And if I answered “no” then they would ask “why not?” Now that I have finally tasted Heng Kee I can understand the reason, it is simply because they are good!

By the way this is the third Heng Kee Bak Kut Teh I have posted so far if you haven’t noticed. The first one I posted is at Bandar Menjalara while the other one is at Taman Kepong. Last time I used to prefer Bak Kut Teh with thick and dark broth, those that have really strong herb taste. But nowadays I am favoring the lighter and sweet version more and more, just like the one served in any Heng Kee you would find. I find their style is more or less the same despite the owners claiming they are all unrelated. *shrugs*
