Skippys Pizza – The Real Pork Pizza Co @ Phileo Damansara 1, PJ
Jul 3rd
Unless you know where to look for it, Pork Pizza is not an easy thing to find in Klang Valley. Just not too long ago there was this article in The Star about Skippys Pizza – a delivery only pizza store that could be the real deal. They even label themselves as ‘The Real Pork Pizza Co‘.
As interesting as it seemed, I wasn’t really convinced to try because you know lah how newspaper articles work. Moreover, when it comes to pizza I still prefer Dominos for their no frills pizza-delivery. But after I caught wind that their restaurant is finally open and accepts dine-in customers, we decided to check it out.
There are much to be said about this pizza place’s history and the owners but I will only say one thing: the skipping kangaroo is selected as the restarurant’s logo because their pizza recipes have an Australian influence in it. For the rest, please refer to the article I linked from The Star earlier. Now back to the restaurant. Since it is still new there are no signboards up yet and the restaurant is as basic as it could be, just a few tables here and there. But still feels comfy and clean nonetheless.
Besides the usual pizza, pasta, lasagna and salad that you would find in any pizza place, you would be surprised to know that they serve Bak Kut Teh too which actually comes under the ‘Special of the Day’. Err, honestly it doesn’t really make sense to me for a pizza place to serve Bak Kut Teh. But whatever floats their boat.
Chinese ‘Kah Liu’ Nasi Lemak @ Restaurant Chuan Lee, PJ
Jun 30th
For those who are already working I am sure you have a list of affordable places for lunch – me too. We even took the extra effort to maintain an Excel list that will help us randomize a makan place if we were undecided. If you ask me, I consider any meals under RM10 still affordable, cheap if it is under RM5. Well, if you’re working in Petaling Jaya then you might want to try this nasi lemak I am going to talk about. Hopefully it is good enough for you as a new entry in that list of yours.
But of course I did not stumble on this nasi lemak by accident because a colleague actually recommended it to me. When I asked if ‘kah liu’ (adding toppings) was available and he replied “Of course, there are mutton curry, chicken, sotong etc” – I was sold as soon as mutton was mentioned.
Damansara Village Steamboat Restaurant @ Kg. Sg. Kayu Ara, PJ
Jun 12th
Damansara Village is another one of the many Pulau Ketam style steamboat restaurants in Klang Valley. For some, it is worth trying simply because of the star attraction – the famous actor and radio personality Patrick Teoh is the owner of this steamboat restaurant. But to me, it really doesn’t matter who the owner is because the main focus should be the food and pricing.
I am going to compare Damansara Village with Happy City at Kepong, which I think is still the steamboat restaurant to beat thus far in terms of taste and value. We had a standard steamboat set for two, with a choice of chicken meat or crabs. We chose the latter because it felt like the better deal.
The crabs were really small (almost pathetic) and had little meat, fresh nonetheless.
Tang Pin Kitchen @ SS2, Petaling Jaya
Jun 6th
After so many visits to Tang Pin Kitchen in SS2, I think I can be considered a frequent customer now. It is mainly a noodle shop of fish ball specialties and I usually have my dinner there whenever I want a simple, quick and no frills meal. Besides, the restaurant is clean and comfy too. The design is old and filled with marble table and chairs that makes you feel like dining in a coffee shop of the past.
Just a prior warning though, most of the food here are not that heavily seasoned so you might feel they are slightly bland. Not a problem for me because there’s always soy sauce and white pepper to boost the flavor. But for people who prefer something light, then Tang Pin Kitchen would the right place.
When I was working in Singapore I never liked the Mee Pok there despite it being a national favorite and all – simply because I cannot convince myself to like a ketchup and vinegar based noodle and I find the flavor just too pungent for my liking. Tang Pin’s Mee Pok tastes authentic yet surprisingly delicious so I am now a converted fan. But, I still order it without vinegar haha.
