Honda Showroom Curry Mee @ Jalan Sungai Pinang, Penang
Mar 7th
A popular spot for Curry Mee at Penang in the morning is along Jalan Sungai Pinang, where a few hawkers have gathered to form a road-side eating spot. It is also where Penangites fondly refer as ‘the Curry Mee in front of Honda showroom’. Just so you know, this eating place is also next to a monsoon drain, not for those who are picky about cleanliness.
Unlike the usual Curry Laksa that already embodies the chili paste into the soup, Penang’s style separates them. Using a light coconut milk based soup, the taste and richness are increased with the addition of specially prepared chili paste. So the toppings aside, you could say chili paste is the main criterion that makes a good Penang Curry Mee. Even though it is a secret recipe among the hawkers, all of them would tell you the same thing when it comes to the chili paste’s prepartion: patience in slowly cooking it to maximize the fragrance.
Eyuzu Japanese Restaurant Buffet RM82++ @ Eastin Hotel
Mar 4th
Just for your information, Eyuzu Japanese Restaurant at Eastin Hotel PJ has no relation with Yuzu at The Gardens. They might have a very smilar name and logo but I was told they are actually under different company and management.
But if you tried Yuzu’s food before and expect the same quality at Eyuzu and vice versa, let me just say you won’t be disappointed. I was researching for a good pure Japanese buffet restaurant and Eyuzu fell into the radar. Eyuzu has not been extensively blogged but most reviews were positive, which was a good indication for starters.
Eyuzu’s Shumatsu (Weekend) Japanese Buffet Dinner is priced at RM82++ for adult and RM41++ for child. If you are dining in a group of four on Sunday, one person will get to dine for free thus reducing the price to RM61.5++ per pax. With this, Eyuzu is essentially one of the more affordable Japanese buffet in town that is also better in terms of quality. However, if you are expecting lots of food selection like those in Tenji or Jogoya then Eyuzu is not for you, as they are sticking to serving only Japanese dishes.
Each diner is given a Dobun Mushi (Japanese tea pot soup)
Flying Chillies Halal Thai Restaurant @ The Gardens
Mar 1st
There are only a few Thai restaurants in The Gardens. Flying Chillies is expensive but suitable for people who are dining in groups. Rak Thai (lower ground floor) on the other hand is cheaper in comparison and has more individual set meals. But avoid the latter because their food is a joke. It was so bad that none of us managed to finish the so-called signature dishes at Rak Thai. So if you’re craving for Thai food while shopping here, you could either head to the food court for the cheaper Thai food stalls or you could splurge at Flying Chillies.
We started off with the highly recommended appetizer here, Mieng Kam @ RM21.50, a traditional Thai appetizer that combines various ingredients as fillings for the betel leaves. If you are unsure of how to eat it, the staff would gladly show you the way.
Starting with a betel leaf, it is rolled into a pocket shape. Then ginger, shallots, roasted peanut, coconut, bird’s eye chili and dried shrimps are added into the leaf according to your personal liking. And lastly, spoon a generous dollop of the tangy sauce on top and you are sure to experience a burst of flavor later. If you are new to this, lower your expectations and you might enjoy it more.
Ah Soon Kor Har Mee (Mantis Prawn) @ Sim Kin San, Rangoon Road
Feb 27th
One special Har Mee (Prawn Noodle) in Penang uses mantis prawn to enhance the sweetness of the noodles. This stall at Sim Kin San Coffee Shop at the end of Rangoon Road has a ‘parent’ stall at another coffee shop just across the street. Ah Soon Kor Har Mee is named after the son (previously unnamed) who is going to take the helm when the father and original cook fully retires.
Depending on the cook, actually there are a few ways to prepare the prawn noodle’s soup. It could be prawn only, prawn + pork bones or pork bones only. Here, the pure prawn or pure pork bones version are available. The latter is not so common and would depend largely on the chili paste that is infused with prawn flavor. If you are not local and only here for only one-off tasting, get the special version @ RM5 to RM7 that comes with mantis prawn, ribs, some intestines (tell him to exclude if you’re not a fan) and roast pork.
