While I respect the dedication Aunty Gemuk has put into her craft over the past few decades, the same couldn’t be said for her pork free rendition of Penang Char Koay Teow. Many claim this is one of the best Char Koay Teow in town but I have to refute that wholeheartedly. I refuse to give in to the mass opinion that this is how Penang Char Koay Teow tastes like.
Here’s what bothered me:
- The noodles are more moist than it should be
- You get only 1 piece of prawn for RM5
- “wok hei” is near to non-existent
- Spiciness dominates the flavor, you could barely taste anything else
Seriously, why would people rave about this CKT? You could make up excuses saying “oh because it’s KL mah, and pork free somemore so the taste is different” but no, CKT could still be good without lard and that’s a fact. I won’t recommend this to anyone even if you are desperately looking for a pork free CKT – because this is a total misrepresentation of my most beloved street food.
