Located at a rather obscure corner of 1 Utama‘s Old Wing is Betjeman & Barton, a tea room where you can find creative and unique blends of loose teas and classic French desserts.
Their first shop was opened in Paris almost a century ago and today, the company has over twenty boutique tea shops all around the world.
For RM60, you can have a wonderful afternoon tea set that comes with one pot of selected tea, eclairs, croissant, sandwiches, some cakes, macaron and handmade chocolates.
Since a pot of tea can be shared among four, the afternoon tea set works to around RM15 per pax. When you consider the setting, serving and reasonably good food, it’s actually quite a deal.
For tea newbies, don’t be intimidated by the insane amount of tea varieties and flavours available here because the staff is more than happy to assist you from the start. To make things easier, they let you take a whiff at a couple of their signature and best seller teas to find out which appeals to you the most.
After smelling a bunch of tea leaves, we decided to go for their Pouchkine which is also one of their signature teas. It is basically a black tea infused with bergamot and citrus fruits. The tea has a deep flavour and tastes like how it smells, albeit not as strong when it hits your palate.
I guess it’s important to smell the tea leaves before committing to one because you’d at least know what to expect. Anyway, I am not an expert in tea so, I shall not go into details.
The tea-infused cakes are served only at the end so that they do not mask one another. Out of the three cakes available, we had the Jardin Rouge Gateau.
If you’re wondering, it got its name from the tea it contains – Jardin Rouge which is a mixture of rose, strawberry, vanilla and grapefruit. While it looks dense, it is actually soft and fluffy with a rich cocoa taste and subtle tea aroma.
Can’t get enough of the cakes and pralines? Check out their chiller for more.
Besides tea leaves, Betjeman & Barton also sells a range of tea paraphernalia that are great as personal or corporate gifts.
While I am sure most locals still prefer brewed coffee over tea, it’s a breath of fresh air to see an establishment such as Betjeman & Barton among the sea of café in KL. Of course there’s TWG Tea too, but you get what I mean.
