Maple Fish Pot – Garoupa Fish Head Steamboat Restaurant @ Plaza Menjalara

Have you ever looked at a restaurant and immediately thought of eating there, even though it’s the untested new kid on the block? Well that happened to us when we stumbled upon Maple Fish Pot. And just when you think Bandar Manjalara a.k.a. steamboat town couldn’t have more steamboat restaurants.. another two new relatively new ones just popped up recently wanting to grab a share of the market.



The person behind the renovation of Maple Fish Pot (MFP) deserves a pat on the back for the idea of incorporating glass walls to create an open and inviting atmosphere. Steamboat restaurants usually gives the impression of having a tight space, feels gloomy and fitted with ugly fluorescent lights but at MFP, it’s spacious and cheerful all around.


There is only one default soup base here which is the milky type (RM38 for smallest) and contains primarily fried Garoupa fish head, yam, tofu and other ingredients. It is very similar to those served at fish head mee hoon shops, already tasty on its own too. So for those who are lactose intolerant or prefer to have a variety of soup base such as tomyam, pumpkin, herbal etc MFP might not suit to your liking.


From what I saw in the menu, sets are not available so you will have to add on a la carte items to complete the experience. Luckily the items are quite affordable so you shouldn’t be really spending too much for a satisfying meal here. One thing worth mentioning here is that ‘char siew’ is also one of their specialties, kinda rare for steamboat restaurants don’t you think?
I think the mantis prawn @ RM8.90 is a good deal for its large portion. However, I actually expected it to be raw as depicted in the menu’s photo instead of being deep fried. A bit misleading if you ask me, but nonetheless it was crunchy and delicious, nice to be eaten as it is or briefly dipped into the soup.


Fresh Pork Slices @ RM11.90 – this is a must have for us in any steamboat meal. It was really fresh without any frozen taste, firm and springy when fully cooked. Some slices may be a tad too fatty though.


Stuffed Bean Curd Puff @ RM7.90 – this was alright but I wouldn’t order it again. We should have tried the other home-made meat balls instead.


Overall it was a nice experience and MFP is one of the more unique steamboat restaurant in town because of their signature milky and fried Garoupa fish head styled soup. Definitely worth a try.
