I have heard a lot about the famous Nasi Kandar at Kampung Melayu but never tried it before due to their operating hours from 6:30am to noon. Having Nasi Kandar early in the morning just seems kinda odd, don’t you think? Well, at least for me.
But hey everything gotta have its first time, right? Moreover it is said to be one of the best and also the hidden gem among the already well known ones like Hameediyah, Kayu, Pelita, Line Clear, Merlin and Shariff so there’s simply no reason to skip this.
A huge piece of chicken, some squids (full with eggs) and a portion of long beans cost RM8. Not too expensive considering its Nasi Kandar but not cheap as well. Reasonable at best, as I could be easily ‘chopped’ RM12-15 for the same dishes at other places.
Don’t be discouraged by the huge crowd of customers because the service is quick and efficient. The workers have good attitude and genuinely wants to serve you unlike some large chained Nasi Kandar restaurants. You should know what I mean lol.
I felt Kampung Melayu Nasi Kandar’s curry dishes are cooked with generous but balanced amount of spices, making them pleasantly rich in taste. One taste was enough to tell the difference between them and the rest. And you will be happy to know that not much oil is present in the gravies, which is always a good thing in any food.
Almost 15-20 dishes are available everyday, in which they are not fixed. I was kinda sad my favorite kari kambing was not available that day lol.
If Nasi Kandar is really too heavy as breakfast, roti canai is available as an alternative. It has received equal acclaim among the frequent customers.
In all, a very good Nasi Kandar but Shariff Nasi Kandar Istimewa remains my favorite for being equally good and much more affordable. Anyway, Nasi Kandar Kampung Melayu is located at Kedai Kopi Kampong Melayu, a coffee shop located at the ground floor of a large flat, next to a morning market. So you should know the the surrounding is pretty questionable and not so hygienic.

I think this was our ex-PM’s favourite nasi kandar.
Can’t seem to locate this particular stretch of flats, but the plateful of goodness (though it may look otherwise to first timers!) for RM8’s rather reasonable.

Nasi Kandar Kampong Melayu, Penang…
Annie’s uncle is a nasi kandar connoisseur. One of the oldest – and arguably the best – nasi kandar stalls is found in the Kampung Melayu (Malay Village) enclave on Penang Island. So, on the morning of Day 3 of our whirlwind trip to Penang, he took us …
this is indeed the best nasi kandar imho
mainly bcos of the generous amount of shallots/onions in their cooking
and the price is much much more reasonable compared to other places
and for others info, this nasi kandar opens at night too but at their branch in Farlim, believe me i know :)
happy eating
