Penang One created a buzz when it first opened in Bandar Puteri Puchong. Their main selling point is to offer patrons authentic Penang hawker fares by fetching the soups and ingredients all the way from Penang to be used in the restaurant.
I can still remember that we dropped by shortly after the opening and were satisfied with the overall experience. Fast forward 7 years later and after a change of location, sad to say things are not looking so good anymore.
The Special Curry Mee @ RM8.50 is said to be Nyonya style and originated in Air Itam market. If you compare what we got to the photo shown on the menu you will notice the huge disparity in the amount of toppings given.
Not to mention the pork blood cubes were hard and the cockles did not taste fresh too. The only redeeming quality of the curry mee would be the soup which was still enjoyable.
The Char Koay Teow @ RM9.50 is supposed to mirror the legendary one at Kampung Jawa. While I was still working in Bayan Lepas the coffee shop (called Wahong Cafe) in Kampung Jawa is one of our most frequented places to have lunch, and needless to say the char koay teow was also our favorite thing to eat. So I can pass a fair judgement here and say that it missed every mark. Not recommended.
When the Ice Kacang (RM6.50) arrived I was ecstatic because it looked good and they totally nailed the presentation. Alas, the flavor was totally off (too much syrup) and most of the toppings tasted frozen.
Based on this disappointing meal, safe to say we won’t be returning anytime soon since. Besides, there are plenty of places in Klang Valley where you can get Penang food that’s actually good. I think Penang One has some serious soul searching to do in order to return to their previous glory.
