For years, San Peng Prawn Mee held the reputation as one of the best prawn mee in KL. Although I wasn’t particularly keen on trying it after reading about it on other blogs, I still came for it – partly because I happened to be nearby one morning and suddenly remembered about this place. Besides, hunting for a good bowl of prawn mee has always been a personal mission of mine.
Apart from prawn mee, clear soup hor fun, fish ball noodles and a handful of side dishes such as pork meatballs, ‘pak jam gai’ (poached chicken) and fish cakes are also available. Also, it is always a welcome sight to see the owners prepare the food themselves.
Since they have quite a few ingredients at their disposal, it’s not surprising for them to mix and match the toppings. So the prawn mee here actually is actually garnished with pieces of chicken as well. This is also somewhat a specialty of theirs, considering the traditional prawn mee usually comes with lean slices of pork.
Shown above is the most extravagant noodle they have, the Prawn Mee Special @ RM19 which comes with extra prawns. In hindsight, if I knew it was going to cost that much, I would have settled for the normal version instead. An extra RM14 for a few pieces of prawns is quite an overkill.
Nevertheless, the prawns were fresh and succulent so at least that pleased me. The overall taste, however, is somewhat disappointing because I feel the soup is a tad thin and lacks prawn flavor.
The chili paste here also enjoys a legendary status and I won’t argue with that. It is indeed one of the best chili paste (for prawn mee) that I have come across so far.
In San Peng’s case, their chili paste makes the noodle. It’s spicy, pungent and infuses the noodle with a much needed kick and brought it alive. In short: prawn mee with no chili – 5/10, 7/10 with chili added.
I don’t know why but I have a nagging feeling that they were having an off day during my visit. So despite the discouraging experience, I plan to drop by again to confirm my thoughts. I hope I am right.
